  • Grace Millane: Police start murder inquiry

Police in New Zealand are to charge a man with the murder of missing British backpacker Grace Millane.

"Grace is no longer alive; this is now a murder investigation", DI Scott Beard of Auckland city police said.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said he told Millane's devastated father, David Millane, on Saturday that they believe Millane was killed.

Grace's father David Millane described her as a "lovely, outgoing, fun-loving, family-orientated daughter".

Beard said they "still do not know where Grace is" but they were "determined to find her and return her to her family".

Beard said "that property is going to be somewhere, the clothing is going to be somewhere, we haven't found it".

Police have located a "vehicle of interest" and are now investigating where it has travelled to.

Her other belongings had remained this week at Base Backpackers, where she had been booked in to stay until today. "We still don't know where Grace is".

Mr Beard said Ms Millane's passport, necklace and watch were still missing and police wanted anyone with information on these or anything else to get in touch on 0800 676 255.

Millane was on a year-long OE after graduating from the University of Lincoln in September.
