  • Fans fuming at split decision as Deontay Wilder retains WBC heavyweight title

Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury fought to a split draw Saturday night, with Wilder retaining his WBC heavyweight title after knocking down his British challenger twice.

The judges scored the fight 115 - 111 for Wilder, 114 - 110 for Fury, and 113 - 113 on the final card.

Should Wilder lose his title to Fury on December 1, Fury must give Wilder a contractually obligated rematch; however, a rematch may still happen even if Wilder wins.

In the ninth round Wilder caught Fury with a left-right combination that rocked the Gypsy King to the floor for a seven count but it was the big right in the 12th that should have finished the fight.

Fury is aiming to reach the mountaintop of the heavyweight division - a position he once enjoyed after his win over the legendary Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.

In the seventh Wilder seemed to sense his tactics were paying dividends, as the 30-year-old Fury's footwork began to slow, and with every step, Wilder would gain estate.

Both fighters are expected to meet again in a rematch, with Fury determined to prove himself as the rightful victor in a second fight. The American teased that depending on how this fight with Fury goes, he may opt another fight with him rather than face Joshua.

Wilder will likely have to rely on speed to prevail having weighed in lighter than he did in his last fight against Luis Ortiz, the champion coming in at 212.5 pounds. I showed good heart to get back. Wilder tried going to the body too but, more often than not, his punches landed harmlessly on Fury's massive elbows.

At the end of the fight, Fury paid tribute to Wilder, whom he called the "second best heavyweight in the world" after himself, and expressing relative delight at his achievement of managing a draw on foreign soil in spite of the two knockdowns.
