Heavy snow hammers mid-west U.S. after holiday weekend

  • The storm was bringing winds from 30 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts of up to 45 to 50 miles mph. Snowfall totals were expected to be 6 to 12 inches across those areas

On Sunday, strong winds and snow created blizzard conditions across much of Nebraska and parts of Kansas, Iowa and Missouri.

Chicago got several inches of snow overnight Sunday, except near Lake Michigan, where the warmer water prevented snow from sticking.

The snow is going to fade quickly, though, and will taper off by mid afternoon.

Other airports that showed flight delays due to weather included Newark in New Jersey, LaGuardia in NY and Boston Logan International.

The highest recorded wind gust during the storm was 58 miles per hour Sunday morning at the Russell Municipal Airport according to the National Weather Service. Monday morning there are a few delays and it is for flights headed to Chicago.
