  • Jury selection in 'El Chapo' trial set to begin Monday in New York

The trial of extradited Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is set to begin on Monday in federal court in Brooklyn, where he is facing drug trafficking and conspiracy charges.

Prosecutors say Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Loera led the Sinaloa Cartel, an alleged criminal enterprise that imported and distributed massive amounts of drugs into the United States, between January 1989 and December 2014.

The ruthless reputation of the Mexican drug lord known as El Chapo has sparked security concerns at his upcoming US trial.

Potential jurors arrived at the courthouse Monday to find it under tight security that included heavily armed officers, some doing sweeps with bomb-sniffing dogs.

Guzman faces life in prison, if convicted.

However, the five-time Ballon d'Or victor was not on Ernesto Valverde's 18-man squad when it was released prior to the match. We have to prepare for the game well. "We would like to win and seal qualification for the knockout stage".

Opening arguments are scheduled to start on November 13, after a week of jury selection, held behind closed doors under security reserved for the most unsafe defendants.

The diminutive drug lord, 61, made a name for himself as the undisputed king of the ruthless Sinaloa Cartel.

After two massive prison breaks by El Chapo in Mexico, authorities in the USA are taking every precaution to keep their notorious prisoner behind bars. News 12 is told the jurors also being escorted to and from court.

A judge is keeping the jury anonymous to protect them from intimidation.

US authorities have described the group as one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world.

So when I arrived back in England I was kind of afraid, not because of Rooney but because of England supporters. The team went out on penalties to Columbus Crew.

So far only two potential jurors have expressed fear about safety.

One juror was excused after she said she couldn't be impartial, saying, 'I feel very bad about drugs'. "I don't know why it's called the El Chapo, but it's delicious", he added to laughter from Guzman's lawyer and an unimpressed defendant. As a reason, the judge cited prosecutors" contention that Guzman's cartel "employs "sicarios, ' or hit men, who carried out hundreds of acts of violence, including murders, assaults and kidnappings".

"El Chapo" is also charged with using firearms in running a drug trafficking and money laundering operations, while making $14 billion in cash from the sale of narcotics throughout the United States and Canada.

He has been in solitary confinement in a high-security NY prison since Mexico extradited him to the United States in January 2017. Prosecutors say the Sinaloa Cartel, named for Guzman's home state, smuggled more than 200 tons of cocaine into the United States.

"El Chapo" has twice escaped from Mexican prisons and is considered an extreme flight risk.
