The couple are expected to spend nine days in West Africa particularly Commonwealth countries.

While in Gambia for a three-day visit Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, also plan to visit a holiday resort in an effort to revive Gambia's tourism sector.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall began their tour of Western Africa on Wednesday, landing in Banjul, the capital of The Gambia.

The couple attended a reception for Chevening alumni, which is a programme that helps Commonwealth students to study in the United Kingdom through scholarships and fellowships, Gambian Commonwealth athletes and High Commission staff. The royal couple will leave for Ghana on Friday and then to Nigeria on November 6.

Britain and Ghana are members of the Commonwealth Clean Oceans Alliance and, at the summit, made a commitment to work together to protect the oceans by taking steps to eliminate avoidable plastic waste.
