  • Former Australian captain Steve Waugh blames lack of punishment for ball tampering scandal

Earlier, Cricket Australia chairman David Peever said the sanctions handed out to Warner, Smith and Bancroft in the aftermath of the ball tampering incident that unfurled in the Newlands Test would not be lifted. "But to go to the point we did was a huge mistake".

'Basic fairness demands these independently verified contributing factors must now be taken into consideration and the penalties reduced'.

The ACA believes an immediate lifting of the bans would also bring the suspensions closer in to line with new International Cricket Council penalties for ball-tampering.

The scandal involved the three players conspiring to use sandpaper to illegally alter the shape of the ball in the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town. "We've got to start rebuilding the cricket team to start winning games for Australia and get a cricket team that Australia can be proud of".

It also hastened the departures of coach Darren Lehmann and CA chief executive James Sutherland.

Steven Smith and David Warner.

Matthews' spray came after ACA president Greg Dyer criticised CA, accusing head office of enforcing the notorious "win at all costs" attitude with an iron fist.

Veteran Australian player Ian Chappell feels disgraced Australia trio Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft have the right to be angry that administrators got away while they were banned.

Cricket Australia's investigation into the scandal in Cape Town determined that only three people were to blame.

"What he wants is not to get any false hope", Western Australia coach Adam Voges said of Bancroft, who is running yoga classes for WACA staff as he waits to return on December 29.

Gerrard's Rangers beaten in Scottish League Cup semis
Absolutely, but for us to win the League Cup we're going to have beaten Hibs, Rangers and Celtic in Edinburgh and Glasgow. We've not had an Old Firm final for a good few years so it would have been incredible to be involved in that.

"So he's going to have to mentally overcome that and find a way to sort of get past that but at the end of the day he's an outstanding cricketer and averages 60 in Test cricket, second only to Bradman over a long period of time, and he loves cricket so I'm sure he'll come back. So the sanctions stand", said Peever at a media conference on Monday after the review was made public.

CA is considering a recommendation urging CA-contracted players to be available for a minimum two Sheffield Shield and one grade match per season but the governing body rejected a bid to have players excused from Twenty20 internationals to play Shield and grade cricket.

But players defended themselves, insisting they played hard but fair.

Cricket insiders have pointed out that potential legal action would not help improve the already dire relations between the ACA and CA, although Dyer maintains there has been a "thawing" in the toxic relationship of last year's pay dispute.

But CA is holding firm on the bans, with any reductions thought unlikely.
