In a news conference on Friday afternoon, Federal Bureau of Investigation director Christopher Wray said a fingerprint on one of the bubble-lined manila envelopes led them to identify Sayoc, who was already in the criminal justice system because of previous arrests in Florida.

Friday night, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents questioned a person at a Broward County residence with a potential connection to Sayoc, but nothing came of the interview, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the probe.

Sayoc was formally charged with sending 13 such devices, and a law enforcement official said he is likely to be charged with sending a 14th device to Mr Tom Steyer, a major Democratic donor.

Donald Trump has accused the media of trying to "score political points" with their coverage of a suspect held in connection with a series of pipe bombs sent to critics of the U.S. president.

In addition to having a criminal record, Sayoc was found to have been actively pushing right-wing conspiracy theories on various social media platforms that targeted George Soros, Hillary Clinton, and others who received packages. he was also a fervent Trump supporter.

While CNN was among the recipients of packages this week, the vast majority of tweets from the account linked to the suspect show screen grabs or videos of television news coverage depict segments from Fox News. According to Wray, they were all made of about 15 cm of PVC pipe, a small clock, a battery, some wiring and potential explosives.

My crew first encountered Cesar Sayoc, the mail bomber/terrorist, 20 months ago when we went down to Melbourne, Florida, to film Trump's first "Trump 2020 Re-election Rally" - just one month after his inauguration. He said possible DNA evidence was found on another package.

Officers hauled away Sayoc's white van - its windows plastered with the pro-Trump stickers, American flags, and images of the Democratic figures.

One law enforcement official said the fingerprint discovery was a major breakthrough.

U.S. justice department officials said the bombs were "not hoax devices" and warned there could be more still undiscovered.

The next morning, he was taken into custody near an auto parts store in Plantation, Fla., north of Miami.

"I think that everybody on the Democratic side would look at that shooter of Congressman Scalise and absolutely condemn his action, him and anyone associated with him", Steyer said, referring to the shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., during a congressional baseball practice a year ago.
