Israel said its forces were attacked with grenades and explosive devices hurled by some of the protesters, some of whom breached the border.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) said Saturday that it will stop firing rockets at Israel after an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire.

Around the same time that the PIJ announced the ceasefire, Israel said it struck eight PIJ targets in the coastal enclave.

Ten of the rockets, that the IDF said were flying from Gaza, were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system. "We know that the orders, incentives were given from Damascus with the clear involvement of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Quds Force". "Our response is not limited geographically".

The Islamic Jihad group, a militant faction operating in the Hamas-ruled Gaza but that has close ties to Iran and Syria, said they agreed to Egyptian mediation efforts and halted the rocket fire, the heaviest to emanate from Gaza in months.

The announcement on Saturday came hours after Israel launched air strikes hitting more than 80 locations in the besieged Gaza Strip after it said rockets were fired from there into southern Israel.

In Gaza City, a four-story building was completely destroyed in a strike, AFP correspondents on the scene said.

Khaled al-Batsh, a top official of the group, told The Associated Press news agency on Saturday that it was grateful to Egypt for brokering the agreement "to restore calm to the Gaza Strip".

Hamas, an Islamic militant group sworn to Israel's destruction, had previously scaled down the protests as Egypt stepped up its efforts to secure calm.

They are also protesting over Israel's crippling blockade of Gaza.

On Friday, four Palestinians aged between 22 and 27 were shot dead by Israeli fire in separate incidents along the border fence, the Gaza health ministry said.

But in northern Gaza, the Health Ministry said that the main hospital in the area was damaged after a nearby Hamas training camp was hit.

Meanwhile, a young Palestinian man has died less than a day after being shot by Israeli military forces during clashes between a group of Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces near the border between the Gaza Strip and the occupied territories.

The protests along the border, which have frequently involved tens of thousands of demonstrators, began in March.

Israel and Hamas have fought three wars since 2008 and much of the worldwide community considers the Islamist movement a terrorist organisation.

The Israeli-Palestinian relations have always been tense over their territorial conflict, with Palestine seeking diplomatic recognition for their independent state on the territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Though he did not accuse Hamas of taking part in the launches, Brig.

The London-based Arabic newspaper Al-Hayat reported Friday that a deal had been reached that would see the protests end in exchange for an easing of Israel's blockade. Widespread desperation among Gaza's 2 million residents has fueled the participation in the Hamas-orchestrated protests.
