The archbishop of Washington was recently named in a report accusing church leaders of covering up sexual abuse. Wuerl stepped down Friday.

The former nuncio has accused church officials, including Pope Francis, of failing to act on accusations of abuse by Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick.

Wuerl was born in Pittsburgh, attended Catholic University in Washington and received a doctorate in theology from the University of Saint Thomas in Rome.

"It's a really good thing".

Bob Cooke, who organized demonstrations including one outside St. Matthew's Cathedral, agreed: "It's the whole system, the clericalism in the church, that needs to be changed". In it, Ouellet both defended the pope and excoriated Vigano, asserting that the conservative cleric had used the scandal over sexual abuse in the U.S.to score ideological points with Francis' critics on the Catholic right.

Francis has refused to confirm or deny the allegations, saying the letter "speaks for itself".

McCarrick, 88, resigned in July after the Vatican said there were grounds to an allegation that he had sexually abused a 16-year-old boy almost 50 years ago.

In August, the state of Pennsylvania released a grand jury report connected to abuse in the Catholic Church. Years later, according to the report, six more people alleged that they were sexually assaulted by O'Malley, in some cases after he had been reinstated.

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Donald Wuerl. For his part, Bishop Wuerl was sent back to his native Pittsburgh, where he was installed as the diocesan bishop in March 1988.

"I think it's fair to say that the Catholic Church, in the U.S.at least, is in a crisis that it's not seen for a long time", Hornbeck said.

When the pope's decision was announced October 12, the Archdiocese of Washington released a letter from Pope Francis to the cardinal, making clear his support for Cardinal Wuerl's ministry and leadership, but also praising the cardinal for putting the good of the church first.

Francis saw Wuerl as that shepherd, a force for unity. "It's far too early to go into names". If the pope allows Wuerl to linger, however, it's not going to be good for anyone.

While he doesn't use the term "The Devil" directly, it is clear whom he is referencing when using the descriptors "the malign one" and "the great accuser".

"Having somebody who's learned about American politics would be a really wise choice", Winters said.

Taking questions from reporters, the rapper also voiced concern about stop-and-frisk policing. Which is pretty underwhelming considering you've just branded yourself a insane motherfucker.

Francis said he received Wuerl's resignation request on September 21. He removed some accused priests from ministry, and lobbied for some of the changes the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops adopted in 2002. "True, we are all sinners, we bishops", he said.

However, the letter said Wuerl was not accused of trying to hide them. "NOOOOOOOOOW It Makes SOOOO Much sense ... what Was I thinking..." "The pope is signaling an acceptance that people need some closure". Wuerl initially questioned Bendig's account but later accepted it and moved to oust Cipolla from the priesthood.

"You have sufficient elements to "justify" your actions and distinguish between what it means to cover up crimes or not to deal with problems, and to commit some mistakes", he said.

After stepping down as archbishop of Washington in 2006, McCarrick "had been strongly advised not to travel and not to appear in public, so as not to provoke additional rumours in his regard".
