In a communique sent to journalists Thursday, Paris-based RSF called for an independent investigation to establish what happened to Khashoggi. "We believe that the murder was premeditated and the body was subsequently moved out of the consulate", one Turkish official told Reuters.

RSF suggests such a probe could be carried out by the U.N. special rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and the U.N. special rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions, in conjunction with the U.N. working group.

After several of his friends were arrested, his column was cancelled by the al-Hayat newspaper and he was allegedly warned to stop tweeting, Mr Khashoggi left Saudi Arabia for the U.S., from where he wrote opinion pieces for the Washington Post and continued to appear on Arab and Western TV channels.

The image was given to the Post by someone close to the Turkish investigation and released by the U.S. daily soon after Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan challenged the Saudis to prove he left the consulate unharmed.

Protestors hold pictures of missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi during a demonstration in front of the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul, on October 8, 2018.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia on October 9 invited Turkish experts and relevant officials to visit its Istanbul consulate.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan's comments appear aimed at slowly intensifying the criticism while balancing the need to maintain the kingdom's investments in Turkey and relations on other issues.

Premier left 'upset' after protesters disrupted racing promotion at Opera House
MORE than 3000 people descended on the Sydney Opera House overnight to protest the Racing NSW projections on the iconic building. The guidelines have always been stretched in the part and the commercialisation of the Opera House has always been there.

That Saudi Arabia would allow foreigners to enter a consulate and search it shows the growing global pressure the kingdom faces over the disappearance of Mr Khashoggi, a critic of Saudi Arabia and contributor to the Washington Post.

A former editor of the al-Watan newspaper and a short-lived Saudi TV news channel, Mr Khashoggi was for years seen as close to the Saudi royal family.

Turkish officials have suggested Khashoggi was murdered.

"Deeply troubled to hear reports about Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi". While it has always been apparent that common values are not shared by all American allies, can we still remain partners when journalists go missing, presumed murdered? Saudi officials insisted he left the building through another exit, but have not provided public evidence to prove it.

The two countries have such an obligation under both criminal law and worldwide human rights law, she said.

A Saudi-led coalition has been at war with Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi rebels since March 2015.

The U.S. State Department and President Donald Trump say they're concerned about the disappearance of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, but they have no idea what happened to him.

Speaking after the vote, McConnell said the protests against Kavanaugh over the past several weeks have "turned our base on fire". Some 164 people were arrested, most for demonstrating on the Capitol steps, 14 for disrupting the Senate's roll call vote.

There are fears that Jamal Khashoggi, who's contributed columns to The Washington Post, has been murdered. Saudi officials said that he left shortly after, but his fiancée, who was waiting for him outside the building, said he had not come out.

The president did not provide details on a USA investigation. The Washington Post reported US intelligence services intercepted communications of Saudi officials, discussing a plan to lure him back to the kingdom.

"We have to get an outcome from this investigation as soon as possible", Mr Erdogan told a news conference in Budapest.

But the disappearance of the journalist, however prominent, may not affect President Trump's bet on the Saudi heir to the throne.

On Monday, Downing Street said the United Kingdom was "working urgently" to establish the facts behind Mr Khashoggi's disappearance.
