In an Associated Press interview, McConnell took issue with President Donald Trump, who has said Alaska voters "will never forgive" Murkowski and that she'll "never recover" politically after bucking her party on Kavanaugh last week.

Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice by the U.S. Senate on Saturday. But he didn't say that was such great news.

In a letter addressed to Judge Timothy M. Tymkovich, the chief circuit judge of the Denver-based 10th Circuit, Roberts said he had selected the court to review the identified complaints and "any pending or new complaints related to the same subject matter". Heading into the November midterms, the party is defending its House and Senate majorities. By Senate GOP rules, he can hold the position for six years.

Grassley, who is a champion of congressional oversight, said a Democratic takeover of the House likely would lead to an investigation into Kavanaugh with the intention of impeaching him.

"It's a great frustration", he said.

Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner, who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee tasked with protecting the GOP's Senate majority this cycle, tweeted Wednesday, "Just before I voted to confirm Justice Kavanaugh, my wife received a text message of a graphic beheading".

Many students agreed that, while they were dismayed by Kavanaugh's confirmation, it did not come as a surprise.

About 38,000 people signed a petition, organised by campaign group Republic, against taxpayers' money being spent on the occasion. The presence of so many royals - and a number of celebrity guests - has prompted extra security measures to be put in place.

Kimmel had some choice words about Trump's performance during Monday's televised ceremony, especially when the president proclaimed that Kavanaugh had been "proven innocent" of Dr. Ford's assault allegation.

"But what we are now seeing is that the enthusiasm and energy on the Republican side comes close to matching the Democratic side and given the states that we're competing in, that's really good news for us", he said.

In his Senate testimony last month, in which he denied allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman in high school and accused Democrats of orchestrating a partisan campaign against him, Kavanaugh promised: "I'll be the first justice in the history of the Supreme Court to have a group of all-women law clerks".

Pointing to the media, Trump said he would use the original phrase, except for the media.

However, "Nobody's going to beat her", McConnell said.

Republicans argue top Democrats have only been fueling that characterization, signaling lately that they won't abide by the mantra that former first lady Michelle Obama famously used in the 2016 campaign - "when they go low, we go high".

Trump had earlier mocked the #MeToo movement at a rally in July.

Kavanaugh seeks new tone after Supreme Court fight; Trump apologies for process
He was referring to the acrimonious debate over Mr Kavanaugh's nomination, after sexual assault allegations were made against him. But when asked again Sunday about it, he said different rules might apply if the same party controls the Senate and White House.

The Joint Committee on Taxation could also be asked to do an audit.

Trump has filed his annual financial disclosure the past two years, which show a range of his earnings from the two years prior, but his tax returns could answer far more questions about his wealth.

"I think the process itself does not detract from the collegiality that we ought to have", he told Iowa reporters Wednesday.

McConnell warned, "So this business of presidential harassment may or may not quite be the victor they think it is".

McConnell has marveled at the way the Supreme Court fight is animating Republican voters - who, polls showed, had been less enthusiastic before Kavanaugh advanced.

Ultimately, every Democrat voted against Kavanaugh except for Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), was created to highlight what Democrats see as a key issue in the midterm elections: protections for pre-existing conditions.

"We have to have the truth", she said.
