India announced the multi-billion-dollar purchase of Russia's S-400 air defence system and several other deals with Moscow Friday during a visit to New Delhi by President Vladimir Putin.

Huge investment opportunities are there in areas including metro rail construction, Sagarmala (a port-led development project), roads, Modi said while addressing businesses of both the countries at India-Russia Business Summit in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russia's most advanced long-range anti-aircraft missile systems will reportedly cost India more than $5 billion.

With its S-400 purchase, India now risks being sanctioned under Washington's Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), which targets countries that purchase arms from Russian Federation.

Pujara too looked at ease at the other end until he was caught behind off debutant Sherman Lewis, missing out on a 16th Test ton. Rahul was gone for a golden duck when Caribbean pacer Shannon Gabriel trapped the Indian opener in front of the wickets.

The US last month sanctioned China's Equipment Development Department for its recent purchase of Sukhoi-25 jet fighters and S-400 missiles from Russian Federation. "We always arrive in India with great pleasure as we know that we are surrounded here in the environment of very frank friendship, business cooperation", Putin said. The deals emerging from the visit will cement and amplify the continued strength of the India-Russia relations even as the US-India relations continues to grow as the US-Russia relationship continues to plummet.

Indian Air Force Chief B.S. Dhanoa has said that the S-400 system would be a "booster shot" for the Indian air force. India is hoping that President Donald Trump's administration will give it a waiver on the weapons systems which New Delhi sees as a deterrent against China's bigger and superior military.

Modi hailed his country's close ties to Moscow, saying that Russian Federation has always "stood shoulder-to-shoulder with India in the energy sector and our goals".

The two countries have a little time to hash things out: the US sanctions kick in when India starts paying for the missile systems, not from the time a deal is reached, experts said.

S-400 and More: What to Expect from the Russian-Indian Summit?
This deal may attract economic sanctions from the US under CAATSA , since US President Donald Trump is yet to certify the deal. China has also perturbed India by loaning vast amounts of money to countries such as Sri Lanka where it has long held sway.

Named after former Indian Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) is a flagship initiative school set up by India's policy think tank NITI Aayog to promote innovation and entrepreneurship among future generations.

A plan for Russian Federation building its second nuclear power plant in India is on the table too, as is the training of Indian astronauts in Russian Federation for New Delhi's first crewed space mission in 2022.

CAATSA, which came into effect in January 2018, is aimed at punishing Russia for its alleged interference in the 2016 presidential elections and mandates the imposition of economic sanctions on countries importing Russian military hardware.

India is the world s biggest arms importer and is undergoing a $100-billion upgrade of its ageing hardware, much of it of Soviet vintage including MiG jets that have frequently crashed in the Indian countryside.
