Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia has played down rumours of a fresh falling out between himself and Jose Mourinho and says the squad still back their manager.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes slammed Jose Mourinho ahead of the Red Devils' UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday night, and the Portuguese has since responded.

Before a ball had been kicked against Valencia, Mourinho had been branded "embarrassing" by former United player Paul Scholes.

Juventus now top group H with six points from two games, United drop to second with four points while Valencia remain third with one point and Young Boys fourth with zero points.

"We knew that we wouldn't create 20 chances".

Sections of the Old Trafford faithful were far from impressed with this latest performance that failed to yield a serious effort on goal until the 71st minute.

United's somewhat abject league form has seen them earn just 10 points from their opening seven Premier League fixtures.

"I am sat here actually surprised he survived after Saturday, the performance was that bad", Scholes said on BT Sport.

"We have Newcastle before the league stops (for the global break) then we have Chelsea and Juventus in three days. I certainly have to develop a better understanding with Ronaldo but I think we work well together". "It will be good for the team if we can beat Newcastle".

Mourinho has been critical of his players and those above him at the club of late and has been the subject of much criticism from the press, which he hit out at following his side's most recent slip. "There are things it is hard for me to say, I do not want to attract any more criticism for being too open", he said. "He said what he wants to say, I'm not interested, honestly, I'm not interested".
