Rouhani says USA, not Iran isolated at UN

  • Trump’s opening remarks at the U.N. Tuesday created an awkward moment with other world leaders laughing about his administration’s accomplishments

President Donald Trump was briefly interrupted by laughter while addressing the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday.

"If President Trump were truly interested in shifting from the warpath to negotiations, he would halt his pressure campaign unjustly targeting 80m Iranians, fire the war hawks in his cabinet and return the United States to compliance with the Iran nuclear accord", Jamal Abdi, the president of that group, said in an emailed statement on Tuesday.

Responding to a question about whether the harsh language that Trump and his top official have used about Iran might lead to war, Rouhani said Iran since the 1979 revolution "has been subjected to that type of language many times".

Trump tweeted: "despite requests, I have no plans to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani".

"Normally these sessions are very, very scripted", said Stewart Patrick, an expert on global governance at the Council on Foreign Relations, a New York-based foreign policy think tank. He has disrupted the world order by withdrawing the United States from the nuclear deal and the Paris climate accord, and threatened to punish North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nations for not paying more for their common defense.

Trump's national security advisor John Bolton warned Tehran of "hell to pay" if it threatens the U.S. or its allies.

"We are not isolated", Rouhani, speaking in Persian with English translation to Iranian and foreign journalists at a hotel conference room across from the United Nations, said today.

Trump read out a list of friends, and it was an unusual assortment, reflecting his personal relationships of the moment, rather than longstanding U.S. alliances.

Trump was forced to pause and, to his credit, recovered by saying: "Didn't expect that reaction but that's OK".

Washington has moved to isolate Iran after pulling out of the 2015 deal to curb Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for a reduction in crippling worldwide sanctions against the country. We do not wish to attack them.

"But under the current conditions, when it comes to a meeting and dialogue, I do not see it as beneficial nor appropriate", he said.

"I do not accept the erosion of multilateralism and don't accept our history unraveling", Macron told the assembly, at times raising his voice.

The shares have recovered since then, trading 15 percent higher for the year, with Choo boosting the latest quarterly results. LVMH, PVH Corp. and Tapestry also looked at Versace in recent months, according to a report on Sunday by Women's Wear Daily .

Pompeo criticized the European Union's intention to establish a work-around to US sanctions, while Bolton warned of "hell to pay" if Iran continued aggravating other nations.

In a meeting in New York, Abe and Rouhani discussed the reinstatement of sanctions by the United States against Iran and a USA demand that countries halt oil imports from Tehran by November 4, a Japanese Foreign Ministry official said. "Similarly, he dislikes groups like North Atlantic Treaty Organisation because he sees them as somehow taking advantage of the United States".

In his address a year ago to the UN, Trump insulted Kim as a "rocket man" bent on nuclear destruction.

The two leaders are trying to arrange a second summit. He called on OPEC to stop raising oil prices and criticised China's trade practices.

"We did not and will not interfere in any country's domestic affairs".

Crude oil prices shot to a four-year high on Tuesday, catapulted by imminent United States sanctions on Iranian crude exports and the apparent reluctance of OPEC and Russian Federation to raise output to offset the potential hit to global supply.
