  • Naomi Osaka upset by Karolina Pliskova in Toray Pan Pacific Open final

Third-seeded Naomi Osaka will face fourth seed Karolina Pliskova in Sunday's final of the Toray Pan Pacific Open after both won their semi-final matches on Saturday in Tokyo.

Naomi Osaka's winning streak ends at 10, including seven matches at the US Open that she won earlier this month.

Prior to the final, Pliskova had spent 419 minutes on court, more than any other player and nearly twice as long as Osaka, but the Japanese player soon wilted and was unable to match the brilliance that secured her a first Grand Slam title.

Butler Requests Commerce From Timberwolves: Reviews
Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor is open to trading superstar Jimmy Butler according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN . All three teams have the cap space to sign Butler to a maximum contract next summer should he reach free agency.

The 20-year-old, looked at a loss for ideas against Pliskova, six years her senior, and buried her head in a towel during the changeover.

The same can not be said of Pliskova, who is excellent at the line. "She was missing quite a lot today so it was working, so I didn't change anything".

"I've never been in a final in Japan and the last one is always the toughest. So I just wanted to be patient and wait for my chances", Pliskova added after capturing her 11th career WTA title without offering up a single break point. "She's a good player, but I'm just happy with my performance this time in Tokyo".

While Tropical Depression Kirk bears watching, system between Bermuda, Bahamas could develop
This system could get a boost by Monday as the strong upper- level winds that are now keeping it at bay are expected to diminish. Some strengthening is expected in coming days, but forecasters say Kirk is likely to begin weakening later in the week.

"Even when it's not working, I know it can work the next day", said former world No. 1 Pliskova, who praised third-seeded Osaka for her play throughout the tournament. Osaka whacked her racket against her sneakers in anger at her wastefulness and, as the strain began to show, she called for her coach Sascha Bajin before groaning: "I feel so stressed out". Within hours of her 6-4, 6-4 defeat in Tokyo, Wuhan Open organisers said on Twitter she withdrew from their tournament, citing a "viral illness".

"I've literally never felt more exhausted in my entire life", she told reporters, confessing that she needed some time off. You don't get to play a final every week so I want to enjoy it. "Naomi was maybe a little bit exhausted, you could see that, but the future is bright for her and congrats to her for an incredible few weeks". "So if there is anything I can take from this it is that I am proud of myself".

Currently just outside the top eight qualifying places for the WTA Finals in Singapore, Pliskova has now spent 420 minutes on court in Tokyo compared to 222 minutes for Osaka.
