Trump Underestimates Sahara: Just 'Build a Wall!' to Block Migrants

  • Trump Reportedly Wanted to Build a Wall in the Sahara Desert

President Trump suggested that Spain could solve Europe's migrant crisis by building a wall across the Sahara, its foreign minister has claimed.

Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell told about Trump's suggestion during a lunch in Madrid organized by Club Siglo XXI, a respectable cultural association that dates back to 1969.

Borrell said that he did not support a wall along the border between the United States and Mexico and that Spanish diplomats had told Trump that the situation was considerably different in scale anyway.

In July, it was reported that more than 19,580 migrants had landed on Spanish shores so far this year.

Super Typhoon Mangkhut hits China; over 2.45 million people evacuated
The South China Morning Post posted videos of workers clearing fallen trees from roads in the Guangdong province. Because the landslide destroyed roads going into the area, no heavy equipment has been able to reach the site.

The report shows Spain as the leading destination for migration in 2018.

Apparently this isn't the only failed attempt by President Trump to build a wall, however.

Trump is thought to have made the suggestion in June when Borrell accompanied Spain's King Felipe and Queen Letizia on an official trip to the White House.

Beyond the sheer size of the Sahara, the other challenge to building such a wall is the fact Spain would need permission to do so from the African countries the massive desert stretches across.

Bush stands by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh amid sexual misconduct allegation
In a statement on Monday, Kavanaugh called the allegation by Ford, who is a college professor, "completely false". Sunny Hostin said Ford should be heard because her allegations are "very credible" and "extremely important".

Trump's proposed wall along the US-Mexico border, which spans 3,200 kilometres (2,000 miles), could cost up to $20 billion (17 billion euros) according to some estimates.

Trump's plan for a border wall along the US-Mexico border has encountered many obstacles in US Congress.

A spokesman for the Spanish Foreign Ministry confirmed to Borrell's comments to CNN but said the ministry had no further comment in relation to the minister's remarks.

The enclaves have become magnets for African migrants seeking a better life in Europe.
