Elon Musk's SpaceX introduced the world to the company's first space tourist Monday night, announcing that Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa is set to embark on a voyage around the moon.

In a tweet sent out before tonight's big reveal, Musk emphasized that the "top SpaceX priority" is to launch national security missions and to get the company's Falcon 9 rockets and Crew Dragon capsules ready to transport astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

Announced previous year, the BFR ship will sit 118 metres long - previously announced as 106 metres (347 feet) long - and Musk has said the ship will contain up to 40 cabins which will have enough space for 100 people.

The Moon is about 385,000 km away from Earth and the last time an astronaut travelled there was in 1972 as part of the Apollo 17 mission.

"This has done a lot to restore my faith in humanity - that somebody's willing to do this", Musk said.

During Monday night's announcement, Musk said the whole goal of SpaceX is to "help advance rocket technology to the point where we could potentially become a multi-planet species", and to "extend life beyond Earth and do so as quickly as we can".

Experts warned that the dovish leader might have a hard time trying to bridge the wide gap between U.S. and North Korea. They then inspected goose-stepping soldiers, and Moon shook hands with North Korean civilians and bowed deeply to them.

As of today, only 24 humans - all Americans have traveled from Earth to the moon.

He has announced that he will take between six and eight artists to accompany with him to the moon, so that they can create masterpieces inspired by the experience when they return.

During its event tonight, the company put a name to the first private passenger who will fly around the moon.

Still, when asked by reporters if Musk would be a passenger, he left the door open to the possibility.

On its website, SpaceX is touting the "first passenger on lunar BFR mission", implying there will be more moon trips.

In the proposed mission, scheduled for 2023, a BFR will launch and fly around the moon before returning to Earth, a flight lasting four to five days.

No guidance has been given on when the moon flight could happen.

Mr Maezawa will not land on the moon. The amount that Maezawa paid for the trip was not disclosed.

The space agency is planning its own lunar flyby with a crew around 2023.

Musk laid out his first design for the mammoth two-stage BFR in 2016 at the International Astronautical Congress in Mexico, and refined it for the 2017 IAC meeting in Australia. Maezawa also attended the maiden launch of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket.
