Lawyers for the woman who is accusing U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault more than 30 years ago says she wants the FBI to investigate her allegation before she testifies publicly. But doubts were raised whether she would appear.
President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the Federal Bureau of Investigation should not get involved and reiterated his support for Kavanaugh, who he said is "anxious" to testify.
"I feel so badly for him. This is not a man that deserves this".
"It's good to hear from both the accuser and the accused here", Conway said, "and allow the Senate to weigh what they learn in those exchanges, along with the mountain of other testimonial evidence and other statements of support and endorsements of Brett Kavanaugh by the women he's known all throughout his life".
Debra Katz, a lawyer for Ford - who only came forward publicly on Sunday after trying to keep her name hidden for more than a month - had said earlier she was ready to speak under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Kavanaugh and Ford have both been invited to testify before the committee next Monday.
Ford skeptics, she said, may be inclined to think, " 'It was such a long time ago, it was two teenagers, it wasn't that serious.' But for each individual victim it's an everyday struggle". "They did not raise it in the thousand-plus follow-up questions that senators sent to Judge Kavanaugh in writing".
Trump said at a news conference that a sex attack allegation against Kavanaugh is "shame" and referred to the judge whose nomination is hanging on by a thread as a 'great gentleman'.
"I have no memory of this alleged incident". Murkowski said Ford's story "must be taken seriously".
The judiciary committee had called a hearing for Monday to look into the allegations. Party leaders made that concession under pressure from senators demanding that the nominee and his accuser give public, sworn testimony before any vote on Trump's nominee.
The Democrats, Trump said, were "lousy" on policy, and in many ways, "lousy" politicians. Limiting the hearing to just Kavanaugh and Ford would be "inadequate, unfair, wrong and a desire not to get at the whole truth", Schumer said.
Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat from California and ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. "He should testify under oath".
To callously use another person's alleged victimization as fodder for a fundraising campaign is grotesque exploitation and only serves to diminish the seriousness of the claim - which Democrats have already shamelessly exploited as a delaying tactic by withholding it for weeks, until just days before the scheduled vote on Kavanaugh.
Kavanaugh has had a relatively smooth confirmation track until the allegations against him were reported last week.
The hearing is certain to be conflicting and emotive. Grassley said on radio's "Hugh Hewitt Show". In their letter to Wray and McGahn, they ask the Federal Bureau of Investigation to interview Kavanaugh, Ford and other relevant witnesses.
Said Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, a key Republican on the panel, said, "We should proceed as planned".

In a letter to the committee's chairman, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, Ford's attorneys said an FBI investigation needed to come first.
Trump earlier on Tuesday stepped up his defence of Kavanaugh and expressed sympathy towards his nominee, who met with officials at the White House for a second straight day, although not with the president.
Kavanaugh calls the allegation "completely false". In the letter, Ford said she had received medical treatment after the assault, adding that "it is upsetting to discuss sexual assault and its repercussions, yet I felt guilty and compelled as a citizen about the idea of not saying anything".
The accusations have roiled a confirmation process that once seemed smooth for Kavanaugh, who could consolidate the conservative grip on the top US court.
The confirmation fight comes just weeks before the November 6 congressional elections in which Democrats are seeking to take control of Congress from Trump's fellow Republicans, which would be a major blow to the president's agenda.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, and Kevin de Leon, a Democrat in the California state Senate, rarely have much in common.
Among the GOP defectors was Sen. The two appeared before a special Judiciary Committee hearing, told their separate stories, and Thomas ultimately was confirmed, 52-48.
There was enormous pressure on GOP Sens. Neither Collins nor Murkowski faces re-election this fall. "The FBI is looking for any kind of current problem".
