  • Hurricane Florence: Hundreds in New Bern awaiting rescue from 'catastrophic' storm surge

The Union Point Park Complex is seen flooded as the Hurricane Florence comes ashore in New Bern, North Carolina September 13, 2018.

There have been two fatalities in Kinston as a result of Florence, according to Lenoir County Emergency Services Director Roger Dail.

It comes amid otherwise serious warnings for residents in North and SC as Hurricane Florence, which was downgraded to a tropical storm on Friday, continues to put properties and lives at risk.

Forecasters warned that drenching rains of 30 centimetres to 1 metre as the hurricane-turned-tropical storm crawls westward across North and SC could trigger epic flooding well inland over the next few days. The child's father was transported to the hospital with injuries.

A tropical storm warning is in now effect for Chesterfield, Lee, Sumter, Clarendon, Calhoun, Orangeburg, Lancaster, Kershaw, Fairfield, Richland, and Lexington counties, according to NWS Columbia.

More than 3,000 inmates at North Carolina prisons and juvenile detention centers were moved out of the storm's path.

Storm Helene to batter NI as severe weather warning is issued
The National Hurricane Center is predicting the storm will produce "catastrophic flash flooding and significant river flooding". The enormous waves were recorded in the northeast quadrant of the hurricane, which is the strongest area of the storm.

And Hurricane Florence, though far from the fastest-windspeed storm in recent memory, remains a significant threat precisely due to the large surge and huge rainfall it's dumping on affected areas. Baker said the weather service is expecting several rivers to experience record peak flooding - although that won't happen immediately.

In Jacksonville, North Carolina, next to Camp Lejeune, firefighters and police fought wind and rain as they went door-to-door to pull people out of the Triangle Motor Inn after the structure began to crumble and the roof started to collapse.

The NHC said hurricane-force winds extended outward 35 miles (55 kms) from the center of the storm and tropical storm-force winds extended almost 170 miles (280 kms) out.

Florence's rain will reach 40 inches in some parts of the Carolina coasts, and gusty winds will send the ocean and rivers spilling into neighborhoods, forecasters said.

Top winds were holding at 90 miles per hour - that's just a Category 1 hurricane - but some communities were already submerged in more than six feet of water as the storm drenched the coast.

The White House said Friday U.S. President Donald Trump will travel to areas hit by Hurricane Florence next week, once it has been determined that his travel would not disrupt any rescue or recovery efforts.

At least 150 people were waiting to be rescued in New Bern, N.C., officials tweeted Thursday evening.

She said the shop, with an electric generator, was safer than their nearby home. "Right now we are on the edge as far as the amount of wind that we will have that will warrant that condition".

SCE&G reported more than 1,925 customers across SC were without power as of 11 p.m.

What is known was that as of 11 p.m. Friday, Florence's maximum winds were recorded at 65 miles per hour while it was hovering near Conway, NWS Columbia reported. Officials in New Bern Friday morning reported storm surge as high as 10 feet.

Forecasters said "catastrophic" freshwater flooding was expected along waterways far from the coast of North and SC.
