WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump raged at his staff on Thursday after a new book and an op-ed in The New York Times both confirmed the existence of an internal White House effort to shield the country from the apparent dangers of his presidency.

On Wednesday night, Trump tweeted a demand that if "the GUTLESS anonymous person does indeed exist, the Times must, for National Security purposes, turn him/her over to government at once!"

"Isn't it a shame that someone can write an article or book, totally make up stories and form a picture of a person that is literally the exact opposite of the fact, and get away with it without retribution or cost", Trump said on Twitter. The excerpts said aides sometimes tried to limit what they saw as damaging behaviour by disregarding his instructions.

On Wednesday, visibly angry at a White House event, Trump called the Times article a "gutless editorial", and in a later tweet he suggested it was treasonous.

The Times acknowledged the "rare step" of publishing an anonymous editorial but said the official's job would be jeopardized if they were identified.

Not everyone is calling for the anonymous author to come forward, however: At least one pundit claims to already know who penned the troubling opinion piece.

Pompeo criticized Times for publishing the piece, saying it "shouldn't surprise anyone" that the "liberal" newspaper chose to print it.

"The Deep State and the Left, and their vehicle, the Fake News Media, are going insane", he wrote, and "they don't know what to do".

The names on that list include Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, Secretary of Defense James Mattis, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Meanwhile, the White House was still reeling from the guilty plea of Michael Cohen, the president's former lawyer, and the conviction of Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager, on August 21.

With such a wide circle of potential suspicion, Trump's men and women felt they had no choice but to speak out.

And officials actively work to insulate themselves from Trump's "impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective" leadership style, the writer says.

The anonymous op-ed basically painted Trump as an unhinged president whose will is being subverted by top administration officials in order to protect the country from his worst instincts and some of his policy moves.

It was reported that Melania Trump or even fellow Republican Mike Pence because of the usage of the word "lodestar" might have been behind the explosive op-ed that surfaced yesterday via the New York Times.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders tried to shut down the speculation.

McMahon isn't the only one to deny that she wrote the article either. He told CNN he had spoken directly with its author, but did not elaborate. He said the author is "failing" and "probably here for all the wrong reasons". The op-ed's author claims they're part of a resistance within the administration.

"Unelected, deep state operatives who defy the voters to push their own secret agendas are truly a threat to democracy itself". He accused the media of trying to undermine the Trump administration and said he found that "incredibly disturbing". He tweeted, "I'm draining the Swamp, and the Swamp is trying to fight back. Don't worry, we will win!" he said earlier on Twitter.
