  • Tropical Storm Gordon strengthens churns towards U.S. Gulf CoastMore

The storm is forecast to unleash multiple hazards along the coast, including torrential rain, strong winds, and a storm surge of up to several feet, which is a rise in ocean water above normally dry coastal land.

A hurricane watch is in effect along the MS and Alabama coast while a tropical storm warning is in effect across portions of South Florida, the Florida Keys and central Gulf Coast. Though officials decided against ordering a mass evacuation from central Houston, voluntary and mandatory evacuations were issued on Saturday for parts to the south west, near two rivers in Fort Bend County.

Tropical Storm Gordon is now pounding south Florida with high winds and heavy rainfall.

The hurricane center also is monitoring a tropical wave a few hundred miles south-southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands. Once it makes landfall, the storm will weaken rapidly.

The hurricane warning was placed into effect for the area stretching from the mouth of the Pearl River in MS to the Alabama-Florida border. This zone is expected to witness the most severe storm effects.

"The combination of a risky storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline", the NHC forecast warns.

Tracking rain, storms for central Indiana Thursday
On the Mississippi Gulf Coast, 12 casinos that were ordered closed Tuesday were given permission Wednesday to open at noon. A storm surge covered barrier islands as the storm blew through, and some inland roadways were flooded by the rain.

People in the warned area should prepare for tropical storm conditions - strong wind and heavy rainfall.

The storm is expected to become a hurricane before it makes landfall Tuesday.

According to the Governor, 63 high water vehicles, 39 boats and four helicopters will be moved to the greater New Orleans area. "Nine out of ten fatalities in tropical systems are due to water".

Gordon is expected to produce total rain accumulations of four to eight inches over the western Florida Panhandle, southwest Alabama, southern and central MS, southeastern and northeastern Louisiana, and southeast Arkansas, the NHC said. Tornadoes are also possible through Wednesday night over MS and western Alabama, it added. National Weather Service offices in Missouri and Oklahoma said Gordon's remnants could add to the rain caused by a frontal boundary already causing heavy rains in parts of the Midwest.

Sea levels could rise as much as 5 feet (1.5 m) from Shell Beach, Louisiana, to Dauphin Island, Alabama, forecasters said. More than 48,000 homes were damaged in the storm either from downed trees or flooding.

A Storm Surge Warning is in effect.

Maximum sustained winds are near 70 miles per hour with higher gusts. Scattered power outages are likely.

By Monday afternoon the storm had passed over Florida's southern tip.
