The warning comes as the United Nations urged Russian Federation - a key supporter of Assad that has complained about militants in Idlib targeting its own facilities - and Turkey to help avert a "bloodbath" in the rebel-held province.

The White House issued a statement Tuesday warning against "a reckless escalation of an already tragic conflict".

"Let us be clear, it remains our firm stance that if President Bashar al-Assad chooses to again use chemical weapons, the United States and its Allies will respond swiftly and appropriately".

The UN says almost three million people live in Idlib and global concern has risen in recent days over a threatened regime assault to oust rebels and jihadists from the province and surrounding areas.

On Monday, President Trump joined a growing chorus of voices warning the Syrian government against a full scale assault, which he said could trigger a "human tragedy".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani are scheduled to meet in Tehran on Friday for a trilateral summit on Syria.

Russian Federation has been a key supporter of Assad and complained about militants in Idlib targeting its own facilities. Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed.

On Wednesday, regime artillery and rocket fire targeted several areas in the province including the HTS-held town of Jisr al-Shughur, according to the Britain-based Observatory, which relies on a network of sources inside Syria.

The Syrian regime has recently announced plans to launch a major military offensive to the area, which is controlled by various armed opposition groups.
