  • Cereal killers Monsanto weedkiller that can ‘probably’ cause cancer found in children’s breakfasts

However, the trial outcome does not mean that glyphosate - the active ingredient in Roundup - causes cancer.

Roundup, introduced in 1974 and based on a chemical called glyphosate, has always been controversial.

The World Health Organization says glyphosate is a "probable carcinogen", and California lists it as a chemical "known to the state to cause cancer". They pointed out that the evidence definitively linking the glyphosate in Roundup to cancer is scant. As reported by the Inquisitr last week, Johnson was required to use Roundup as a bulk spray up to 30 times a year, and the jury found Monsanto accountable for the man's terminal cancer.

The study, carried out by the non-profit Environmental Working Group, found that 43 out of 45 popular breakfast cereals tested in three locations in the USA contained traces of glyphosate.

"This verdict is just the first in what could be a long legal battle over Roundup, and proving causality in such cases is not easy", Richard Stevens, a professor at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine who specializes in cancer and its causes, wrote in a recent post for The Conversation.

"No other herbicide has been tested to the lengths that glyphosate has", the NFF president, Fiona Simson, said as quoted in The Guardian.

However, according to a report in Hindu Business Line which cites Indo-Canadian food security activist and author of Poison Foods of North America Tony Mitra, use of glyphosate in Sri Lanka has been linked to kidney damage among sugarcane plantation workers.

The Environmental Working Group says they feel a stricter limit is needed, especially because research often does not focus on long-term effects on children, who have smaller body mass than adults.

EWG determined Quaker Old-Fashioned Oats, Cheerios, Quaker Dinosaur Egg Instant Oats, Great Value Instant Oats, and Back to Nature Classic Granola Clusters all had excessive levels of Glyphosate, according to its study.

General Mills and Quaker Oats are relying on outdated safety standards used by a government agency that is notorious for neglecting new science on chemicals. (See those statements, as well as EWG's response, at the bottom of this article). "We're saying a pesticide like this which has the ability to increase the risk of cancer has no place in food an particularly not foods that are marketed to children", said Walker.

Pogba tight-lipped over United situation for fear of being fined
United went on to win 2-1, with Pogba, fresh from a World Cup-winning campaign that he was lauded for, scoring the opener. Bartomeu suggested that more players will leave the club before the window closed but didn't rule out incomings either.

Quaker Oats released a statement, "We proudly stand by the safety and quality of our Quaker products".

Meanwhile, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has a risk assessment that "concludes that glyphosate is not likely to be carcinogenic to humans". "And essentially we're just throwing it at them".

The Trump Administration's Waters of the US rule was delivered a legal blow this week when a SC federal judge issued an injunction.

With the companies nearing completion of their marathon merger process, significant developments are unfolding in lawsuits facing two of Monsanto's top weedkilling products - and soon to be inherited by Bayer.

Traders cited a report by a German weekly on more lawsuits brought by USA farmers over crop damage from weed killer dicamba.
