A young woman has been given a second chance at life after undergoing a face transplant.

When discussing National Geographic magazine's report on Stubblefield, the publication's editor-in-chief, Susan Goldberg, said that Stubblefield's story will help to save many lives.

The 31-hour-surgery gave Katie Stubblefield a new face after a year wait for a donor, where they availed organ of 31-year-old slain Andrea Schneider, after the family of the donor chose to help. Unfortunately, her face suffered severe damage during the failed attempt, which led to her loosing her face.

Hurt and angry, Stubblefield went over to her brother Robert's place, went to the bathroom and used his gun to shoot herself. She shot herself with a rifle, taking most of her face off in the process.

According to National Geographic, Katie had to undergo nearly three years of extensive surgeries, emotional agony and then the struggle to embrace her new face.

Katie Stubblefield (pictured left in 2013 and right in 2018) has become the youngest person in the United States to receive a face transplant after the country's first face transplant on Connie Culp in 2008.

While Stubblefield's story may help others to think twice about trying to take their lives, her journey is also helping to shed light on yet another problem.

"I felt so guilty that I had put my family through such pain".

Adrea Schneider, was a 31-year-old woman and organ donor who died three days earlier after failing to recover from a drug overdose.

Katie's procedure involved transplanting the scalp, forehead, upper and lower eyelids, eye sockets, nose, upper cheeks, upper jaw and half of lower jaw, upper teeth, lower teeth, partial facial nerves, muscles and skin - effectively replacing her full facial tissue, according to Cleveland Clinic.

Katie doesn't remember that tragic day when she lost her face. She underwent physical therapy but still needed help eating, because she didn't have lips.

While Katie's medical care team hopes that her surgery can advance the field of face transplantation, there are many other hopes for her future. Katie, 22, one year and one month after her surgery.

Stubblefield was the youngest person to have an entire face transplant surgery in America, making her story a special one. And she is speaking about her surgery to help warn of the lasting harms of suicide. Permission required for reproduction. Ms Stubblefield plans on attending online college soon to pursue a career in counselling and motivational speaking, specifically to raise awareness about suicide and suicide prevention.
