Ex-Manafort Accountant Given the Pink Slip After Testifying

  • In testimony Tuesday Rick Gates detailed various schemes he engaged in while working for Paul Manafort

There have been exceptions, like when Gates said that he might have also embezzled from the Trump inauguration committee by inflating his expenses, and when he testified about how Manafort reached out to talk about securing a banker who loaned him money tickets to the inauguration and potentially a position in the administration. They also need to prove he did so with intent and not by mistake.

In the six days since the trial began, the jury has heard from 15 witnesses including two of Manafort's former accountants and his former bookkeeper. He also refused to let them ask Manafort's former business associate Rick Gates about his reported extramarital affairs.

He told jurors how he disguised millions of dollars in foreign income as loans in order to lower Manafort's tax bill.

Gates, 46, is expected to be cross-examined for about another hour by Manafort's attorney Kevin Downing before prosecutors get a second chance to try and undo some of the possibly damaging testimony he gave during their redirect. Prosecutors agreed to drop a wide variety of additional charges against Gates in exchange for his guilty pleas and cooperation against Manafort.

Mr Gates implicated himself in broad criminal conduct on the stand, an apparent strategic decision by prosecutors to take some of the steam out of defence questioning.

Gates, who testified Monday and returned to the witness stand Tuesday, detailed years of alleged lawbreaking at Manafort's political firm and admitted to stealing money from secret overseas bank accounts.

July 10: TheUS releases an initial listof an additional $200 billion worth of Chinese goods that could be subject to a 10% tariff. In April, the administration had announced plans to slap tariffs on 1,333 Chinese product lines worth $50 billion a year.

The federal judge in the trial of U.S. President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort expressed contrition on Thursday to jurors after berating prosecutors for allowing a witness to watch the proceedings, despite having given his earlier approval.

Prosecutors didn't specify the nature of the information, but one bench conference came after Manafort's defense team attempted to question Gates about whether he had discussed his work on the Trump campaign with Mueller's team.

Gates explained that Manafort's financial difficulties worsened in 2014, when Viktor Yanukovych was no longer in power and the Party of Regions disintegrated.

"I think he has to keep hammering at the point that Gates is not a credible witness and he can't be believed", he said.

For most of the trial, Manafort's lawyers have ceded that numerous financial documents he submitted to the IRS, banks, and his accountants contained falsified information.

In a court filing revealed on Thursday, the Mueller team asked the judge to explain to the jury that he was wrong to criticize the prosecutor.

She celebrated six years of sobriety in March, but appeared to reveal she'd relapsed in a song, " Sober ", released in June. Star in an unconscious state was found by her assistant and, fearing that she was dead, began to shout ("She's dead!").

It was a major break for Judge T.S. Ellis III, who in little more than a week of the trial has berated prosecutors for moving too slowly through their case, limited the evidence they can present, and even accused one government lawyer of crying. With the emails, prosecutors sought to show that Manafort controlled undeclared accounts that took in money from his Ukrainian clients and sent money to the USA for his personal use.

Prosecutors said they plan to conclude their case on Friday. Maybe I made a mistake.

"The jury is very sensitive to what it perceives, correctly or not, to be the judge's view of the case", Gillers said.

Within two months of securing the aforementioned $3.4 million loan from Citizens Bank in March 2016, Manafort applied for another loan - for $5.5 million - for his Brooklyn property, Citizens Bank loan officer assistant Taryn Rodriguez testified Thursday afternoon.

While Gates and others have pleaded guilty, Manafort has refused to strike a deal and legal experts say he may be holding out hopes of a pardon from Trump.

Andres put it to him: "As you sit here today, do you have any doubt that if you lie, the special counsel's office will rip up your plea agreement?"
