Dozens of Yemeni schoolchildren are dead Thursday after an air strike by the US -backed, Saudi-led coalition hit a school bus that was carrying them through a crowded market.
The Saudi-led Coalition, which has been conducting a military campaign to oust the Houthi rebels, didn't immediately respond to CNN questions.
The International Red Cross says the airstrike hit a bus full of children, parked in a busy market in Dahyan, in Sa'ada province - controlled by the Houthis.
Johannes Bruwer, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation to Yemen, said in a tweet that most of those killed by the airstrike were children less than 10 years of age. A hospital supported by the aid group has received "dozens of dead and wounded", adding that "under global humanitarian law, civilians must be protected during conflict".
The Houthis' al-Masirah TV reported that 39 people had been killed and 51 wounded, saying they were "mostly children".

The coalition said the projectile, fired toward the southwestern Saudi city of Jizan, was intercepted and destroyed.
Fragments from the Houthi missile launched at Jizan Industrial City had killed one Yemeni civilian and wounded 11, Saudi state media said earlier on Thursday.
According to Al Jazeera, the Saudi coalition claimed it had targeted "missile launchers", but Yemen-based reporters who have witnessed numerous attacks in civilian-populated areas vigorously disputed the claim. Say: I want the State Dept to condemn the Saudis for bombing Yemeni children and I want the U.S. to stop selling weapons to Saudi Arabia.
Footage provided by the rebels' Ansarullah Media Centre showed a number of wounded children lying two to a hospital bed, while in a separate shot medics tended to casualties in a crowded room.
Colonel al-Maliki said the coalition will take all necessary actions against the criminal, terrorist acts of pro-Iranian Houthi militias, such as the recruitment and placement of children on battle fronts and "using them as tools to cover for their terrorist acts".
Global rights groups repeated calls for an end to the war and strongly condemned the bus attack and other civilian massacres.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged an "independent and prompt" probe, while State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the U.S. is "calling the Saudi led coalition to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident". There was no immediate comment from the Houthis in response to the coalition allegations.
The war in Yemen has left more than 10,000 dead since 2015, sparking what the United Nations says is the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
