  • GOP Lawmakers File Articles Of Impeachment Against Rod Rosenstein

"No, I do not", he said.

"I think they should understand by now, the Department of Justice is not going to be extorted", he said.

A contempt vote would still be a significant step against Rosenstein, but it's not as severe as trying to impeach him, which could result in a trial in the Senate if the vote was successful.

Rosenstein's job appeared at least temporarily safe despite the impeachment effort., headed by Reps. The documents were introduced just before House lawmakers are getting ready to leave for the five-week summer recess; Meadows did not use a procedural move that could have forced a vote this week. On Thursday, Jordan announced he would run to replace Ryan, who isn't running for re-election, as speaker.

Rosenstein, the No. 2 Justice Department official, then appointed Mueller to lead the probe after President Donald Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

Republicans have publicly grill grilled and hammered Mr. Rosenstein and the FBI director Christopher Wray in an open hearing about investigations into both President Trump and Hillary Clinton last month.

"Information has been hidden, efforts have been stonewalled", Meadows said during an appearance on Fox News Wednesday night.

The Justice Department has set aside two rooms at its headquarters for other lawmakers and their staffers to review secret documents - one room for documents about the Russian Federation probe, and another room for documents relating to the probe of Clinton's use of a private email server, the official said.

Ryan made the comments a day after a group of 11 GOP lawmakers filed articles of impeachment against Rosenstein.

A broader swath of Republicans have criticized Rosenstein's appointment of the special counsel from almost the moment it occurred.

Undaunted, conservatives have continued to argue that the Mueller probe and Rosenstein's non-compliance are two separate issues.

For impeachment to begin, Meadows and Jordan would need the support of a majority in Congress. "Time is up and the consequences are here".

Diveykin, and said Diveykin never told him that the Russians had dirt on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. The notion that the FISA warrant was classified, however, is the rule, not the exception.

Former deputy attorney general Sally Yates, an Obama appointee, went further in criticizing the push to impeach Rosenstein on Thursday, calling it "absurd", on Twitter and saying that it will "undoubtedly fail".

Reps. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., and Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, allege in the filing that Rosenstein has failed to respond to congressional demands for documents, and Meadows tweeted: "We have had enough". The House Judiciary Committee has to initiate contempt proceedings; if the panel were to pass such a resolution it would automatically become privileged.

Rosenstein told lawmakers in June that he and the Justice Department are doing their best to provide the information sought by Congress. "When you find some problem with the production or with questions, it doesn't mean that I'm personally trying to hide something from you". The department has provided lawmakers with more than 800,000 documents, but Meadows said after the meeting that there was still "frustration" with how Justice has handled the oversight requests.

A Judiciary aide said the committee expects DOJ's full compliance with its subpoena and that the department will produce all the documents Congress is entitled to and fully cooperate with Judiciary's investigation.

"The attack on Rosenstein of course is an attack on the Mueller investigation", Pelosi said at a news conference on Thursday.
