New photo of Prince George released to mark his 5th birthday

George has made a number of eventful public appearances over the past 12 months, from starting school to a cheeky moment on Buckingham Palace's balcony, as the royal family celebrated the Queen's official birthday.

The picture, tweeted by Kensington Palace, was accompanied by a message of thanks from the duke and duchess to everyone for their "lovely messages".

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have released a new portrait of Prince George, to mark his fifth birthday.

George has two younger siblings.

The photograph shows George; arms behind back with his trademark smile, standing in the gardens of Clarence House.

A great-grandchild to the Queen, he will be the 43rd monarch since William the Conqueror obtained the crown of England if, as expected, he follows the reigns of the Prince of Wales, then William.
