Samsung opens the world's largest phone factory in India

Earlier today, Samsung announced the opening of the "world's largest" mobile phone manufacturing facility as it aims to expand production in world's fastest growing smartphone market. It will be officially inaugrated today by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon.

Last year, Samsung announced budget of Rs 4915 crore to expand the phone manufacturing factory, and now, the plant is ready to manufacture nearly every model of Samsung.

The plant will make up to 120 million phones a year - up from 67 million - and potentially include other electronic appliances like refrigerators and flat panel televisions down the line.

The investment seems to make complete sense as 10 per cent of its production takes place in India and Samsungs plans to enhance it further to 50 per cent in the next three years.

The decision by Samsung comes at a critical time for the South Korean electronics giant, which is facing a tough battle from Chinese competitors for the control of India's massive smartphone market. Samsung has two manufacturing plants and five research and development centres in India. The unit will manufacture one crore phones a month, 70 per cent of which will be earmarked for domestic usage.

India overtook the United States previous year to become the world's second-largest smartphone market after China. "The completion of the factory was made possible by the cooperation of the Indian government and the government of Uttar Pradesh", he said.
