  • Japan executes ex-leader of cult behind subway sarin attack that killed 13 – report

The cult released sarin gas on the Tokyo subway system in March 1995 killing 13 people and injuring more than 6000.

Doomsday cult leader Shoko Asahara and six of his followers were executed Friday for their roles in a deadly 1995 gas attack on the Tokyo subways and other crimes, closing a chapter on one of Japan's most shocking crimes in recent memory.

His hanging Friday was the first execution of any of the 13 cult members on death row for the attack and other crimes.

Recounting how the doomsday cult attracted educated youths, Tadashi Moriyama, a Takushoku University professor, said he feels that "it was not fully revealed at the trial or among researchers why many highly educated people or those with high social status were involved in the crimes".

Two days after the attack police raided the compounds of the Aum Shinrikyo cult.

Canada heat wave-linked death toll doubles to 33
Numerous victims were men over the age of 50 living alone in private apartments and seniors' residences, according to Dr. Environment Canada has lifted heat warnings for the affected regions, including Quebec, for the next several days.

In the final moments of the life of Shoko Asahara and the other six members who were executed, it is not known if they felt remorse - if they feared their own demise - or if they still claimed to be innocent? At the same time, he warned lawyers they would die if they continued questioning Aum Shinrikyo members.

The 1995 subway attack was the most audacious.

At a sheep farm in rural Western Australia and other properties, cult scientists began testing sarin while others synthesized the VX nerve agent and launched a failed attempt to manufacture automatic rifles.

In Japan, death sentences are not carried out until the verdict against all accused and accomplices are final, with no pending appeals left against any of the group.

On March 20, 1995, cult members used umbrellas to puncture plastic bags, releasing sarin nerve gas inside subway cars just as their trains approached the Kasumigaseki station, Japan's Capitol Hill, during the morning rush.

The government's human rights envoy, Baerbel Kofler, called the poison gas attack on rush-hour commuters in Tokyo's subway that killed 13 people and sickened more than 6,000 a "terrible deed". At its peak, Asahara had tens of thousands of followers worldwide.

During his eight-year trial, Asahara talked incoherently, occasionally babbling in broken English, and never acknowledged his responsibility or offered meaningful explanations.

Born Chizuo Matsumoto in 1955, Asahara founded Aum Shinrikyo, or Supreme Truth, in the mid-1980s.

They said his death could trigger the naming of a new cult leader, possibly his second son, and his followers could be elevated to the status of "martyrs" among the remaining adherents.

Over the years, the group managed to lure in followers from some of Japan's top universities and boasted some 10,000 followers in Japan and another 30,000 in Russian Federation.
