  • Hundreds of women in D.C. protest ‘zero-tolerance’ immigration policy

Capitol Police arrested almost 600 Women's March protesters who filled the atrium of the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill today in opposition to the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" border enforcement policies.

Cheered on by some Democratic lawmakers who walked among them, the women said they were pushed to the protest by President Trump's zero tolerance policy which sparked separations of children from their parents.

The protest was organized and promoted by Women's March, the same group that mounted a massive protest effort previous year shortly after President Donald Trump took office.

Protesters in the Hart Senate Office Building unfurled banners that read: "End all detention camps" and "Families belong together in freedom".

Wearing stickers that said "Deport Trump", and "F**k Trump" shirts, the protestors chanted slogans like "No ban no wall, America is home to all".

Congresswoman Jayapal tweeted a video of the protest with the caption, "Today's action is a mass protest, risking arrest, by powerful women, and I'm proud to be a part of it". That police had led to the separation of thousands of children from their parents before the Trump administration halted the separations in late June.

Democrat Senators Kristen Gillibrand and Elizabeth Warren, both likely presidential candidates in 2020, and number of other elected officially fully participated.
