"Due to a volcanic ash cloud caused by Mount Agung in Bali, it is now not safe to operate flights to or from Denpasar Airport", the statement said.

The airport on Indonesia's holiday island of Bali reopened on Friday after ash from a volcano forced a brief closure and the cancellation of more than 300 flights.

At Bali's global airport, hundreds of passengers were queuing in the lobby of the terminal to get updates from airlines, while some slept on the floor next to their baggage.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho of the disaster mitigation agency said activity was going on deep under the volcano.

It said it would remain closed until at least 7 p.m. local time.

Tens of thousands of locals fled to evacuation centres after last year's eruption. The return flight NZ246 from Denpasar to Auckland was also cancelled.

There is a 4km no-go zone around Agung's peak.
