  • New Zealand's Prime Minister arrives at hospital to give birth. She's the first pregnant world leader since 1990

New Zealand's Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern has had a baby girl. Winston Peters, Ms Ardern's deputy PM, will become Acting PM during her maternity leave, although Ms Ardern has already said she will be fully contactable until she returns.

Ms Ardern posted a photo on her Instagram account showing her and partner Clarke Gayford with the baby at Auckland City Hospital.

The baby, weighing 3.31 kilograms (7 pounds 3 ounces), was delivered at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday at Auckland Hospital, Ardern's office said in a statement.

The couple had been told they would need help to conceive, so she was surprised to learn she was pregnant just six days before she was confirmed as Prime Minister.

Prince Louis' Christening Date Announced By Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge
George was also christened in the Chapel Royal, but Charlotte was baptised at the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Sandringham. As for Kate Middleton , she's on maternity leave after giving birth to Prince Louis on April 23.

At 37, Ardern is the world's youngest female leader, and is the second elected world leader to give birth while in office. She has not said whether she's expecting a boy or a girl.

It was an extraordinary rise for Ms Ardern - she only became leader a few weeks before the September election when her colleagues turned to her to save them from an electoral massacre. "I am not the first woman to work and have a baby; there are many women who have done this before".

Ms Ardern was driven to hospital by her partner Clark Gayford and arrived at 5.50am this morning.

"I totally accept that I will be asked that question because I chose to be honest about it", Ardern said on "The AM Show", a New Zealand radio program.

"But this is news that Jacinda wanted to share with New Zealand, and for it to be part of New Zealand, and I think her and Clarke have managed to do just that".

"It's a happy day and on behalf of the coalition government we wish her and Clarke all the very best", says Peters. "These things may seem minor at the time, but to the labouring woman, he or she is her rock, her strength to succeed!" says Liz Pearce, Parent Education and Operations Manager at Parents Centres New Zealand.

She said that after the birth, she hoped to have some quiet time to enjoy as a family.
