Why the Trump-Kim summit upsets S Korean conservatives

  • Hush-hush meet North Korea's Kim Jong Un lands in Beijing for two-day visit reports Chinese media

A North Korean source in one of the two Hamgyong provinces told Daily NK on Tuesday, ahead of his Singapore summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, Kim heightened surveillance of senior military officials and confiscated their mobile phones. After departing that gathering in Quebec, Trump attacked Justin Trudeau as "dishonest" and "weak" after the Canadian prime minister told reporters his government would retaliate against new USA tariffs it viewed as unfair. I mean, obviously, it's the very front end of a process.

Negotiations between the USA and North Korean teams are continuing in an attempt to iron out the details of what was a vaguely worded agreement between the two leaders in Singapore.

Last September, Trump taunted Kim as "Rocket Man" in a speech at the United Nations, during which he vowed to "totally destroy North Korea" if the US was forced to defend itself or its allies.

"Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office", he said in a tweet.

As a result, it will be hard for negotiations to move forward with different objectives in mind by the United States and North Korea, Denmark warned.

North Korea conducted satellite launches into space from Sohae in 2012 and 2016, drawing worldwide condemnation as the rocket technology used could be adapted for use with ballistic missiles.

The US defence secretary, James Mattis, has said he is unaware of any steps taken by North Korea towards dismantling its nuclear weapons programme since the Singapore summit and does not expect any in the immediate future.

The US says China is in agreement on that point, although Chinese officials say sanctions should not be an end in themselves.

A series of posters celebrating the April 27 Panmunjom Declaration between Pyongyang and South Korea have also been released.

Trump has expressed frustration over criticism that he legitimized the communist regime and gave it concessions by meeting with the leader and agreeing to suspend military exercises between South Korea and the U.S. In return, critics say, North Korea committed only to the vaguely worded "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea expected to begin transferring remains of USA troops soon
Trump had raised eyebrows by describing the exercises as "provocative" - a term used by the North. Kim will be in Beijing through Wednesday, state media reported .

Trump's meeting with Kim came on the heels of his combative G-7 meeting with traditional US allies, including Canada and the United Kingdom.

Trump said he has no plans to decrease the number of USA troops in the South as part of security assurances for the North, but has left open the possibility to do so in the future.

North Korea remains under strict sanctions imposed in August by the United Nations Security Council that ban exports of coal, iron, lead and seafood - which account for $1 billion of the country's annual $3 billion in trade. "The United States will continue to monitor this site closely as we move forward in our negotiations", said the official.

Officials said a transfer could occur in the next few days but that details and exact timing have not been finalized.

Before her promotion, she used to be the chief of the North America bureau within the North Korean foreign ministry, and was charged with overseeing the so-called Track Two Diplomacy with the U.S., i.e., Pyongyang's secret talks with Washington held in Norway. "That's all that I can tell you".
