President Donald Trump, who has bashed online retail powerhouse Amazon.com Inc and whose administration backed South Dakota, said on Twitter.

The top court in the U.S. has ruled that states can force online companies to collect sales tax from their customers.

On Thursday, the United State Supreme Court overturned two decisions regarding states' collection of taxes from online sales. The cases the court overturned said that if a business was shipping a customer's purchase to a state where the business didn't have a physical presence such as a warehouse or office, the business didn't have to collect the state's sales tax.

South Dakota's law, enacted in 2016, focused on larger out-of-state e-commerce companies, requiring them to collect sales tax if they amass $100,000 in sales or 200 separate transactions.

Stocks for several major online retailers dropped in response to the news, including Amazon, Wayfair, and eBay. Those retailers may face headaches complying with various state sales tax laws, though there are software options to help.

The final decision needs to be unanimous for OPEC, however, and many analysts expect the meeting to be a disaster. US President Donald Trump last week pushed ahead with tariffs on billion of Chinese imports, starting on July 6.

Hearst said MA shoppers who want to avoid paying a state sales tax, travel to New Hampshire.

The win was welcomed by groups representing brick-and-mortar retailers and decried by e-commerce advocates.

Businesses that sell through marketplace websites, such as third-party sellers on Amazon, and store inventory in the state at the time of the sale are also required to collect sales tax, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue.

Still, the ruling clears the way for other states to enact similar laws requiring retailers to collect applicable sales tax on online purchases made by residents of the state. It's likely to negate some of the price advantages that come from buying online, as you might guess, but there's also the possibility of creating headaches for smaller e-commerce outfits that might lose a price advantage over heavyweights already paying state sales taxes.

Only five states do not have a state-wide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon.

In the majority decision, Justice Anthony Kennedy noted that the realities of consumer habits have changed drastically since the 1992 decision. Chief Justice John Roberts dissented along with Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan.

With this ruling look for more states and local governments to push for taxes on online physical and digital sales.

The Massachusetts law went into effect, but was challenged in court by a company, Crutchfield Corporation, which said it violated federal law. Second, the Act ensures that no obligation to remit the sales tax may be applied retroactively. S. B.

That's a big issue, considering that e-commerce sales in the US were $435.5 billion a year ago, vs. $180 billion in mail-order sales in 1992 when the court issued its first ruling on interstate sales and taxes. First, the Act applies a safe harbor to those who transact only limited business in South Dakota.
