Two sheriff's deputies were fatally shot when an inmate overpowered them near a Kansas courthouse on Friday, officials said.

According to Fox News, 44-year-old Theresa King and 35-year-old Patrick Rohrer were shot, possibly with their own weapons, as they drove the suspect to court. Patrick Rohrer, 35, died first and Theresa King died at 12:20 a.m. Saturday, the sheriff's office said.

Both Rohrer and King were transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center, where Rohrer later died.

The inmate was also shot during a confrontation in a gated area near the Wyandotte County Courthouse. Authorities also have not released any information about the suspect or the extent of his injuries. Video from the scene showed the courthouse surrounded by yellow police tape, several police vehicles parked in the street and numerous uniformed law enforcement officers walking the grounds. Brad Lancaster, 39, was shot and killed on the job on May 9, 2016. Kelli Bailiff says the suspect also was wounded in the shooting late Friday morning.

Bailiff said the deputies were following protocol when the deadly altercation occurred.

'Our hearts break for our brothers and sisters at Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office as well as for the loved ones of the deputies shot today, one of whom has died.

"Let us take just one moment of silence to honor their sacrifices and the sacrifices of their families", said David Alvey, mayor of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan., at a press conference at City Hall. "We will be looking at that video", he said.
