  • Mike Pompeo draws firm line on North Korea as summit hangs in balance

Two Indian-origin ministers in Singapore, Vivian Balakrishnan and K Shanmugam, are playing a key role in facilitating a hassle-free summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un tomorrow.

Trump said Monday that there was "excitement in the air" ahead of the meeting, though observers were anxious to see the mood after a one-on-one with Kim Tuesday morning (9 p.m. Monday ET) and a bilateral meeting between US and North Korean officials.

That was an apparent nod to North Korea's sensitivities about the fate of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, who gave up his fledging nuclear program in exchange for economic incentives from the United States only to be ousted and killed by a mob years later.

In May, Trump cancelled the meeting with Kim, blaming hostility and anger displayed by North Korea regarding the US-South Korea "Max Thunder" military drills.

The summit will be the first between a North Korean leader and a sitting American president.

Historic meetings between the USA and North Korea have advanced so rapidly that Donald Trump will leave Singapore earlier than expected. It will certainly be an exciting day and I know that Kim Jong-un will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before...

At the end of the episode, Bourdain sat in a room with other recovering heroin addicts and spoke to them about how he got past it. A CNN staffer said to reporters from Us Weekly that everyone in the offices at CNN was "devastated" by the news of his death.

Trump withdrew the USA from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which the Obama administration had reached with Iran, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russian Federation.

Actually, says another group, there will indeed be disarmament, a peace treaty ending the Korean War and North Korea's emergence as a contributing member of the worldwide community - but just not right now.

Kim Jong-un has arrived in Singapore on Sunday ahead of his historic summit with President Donald Trump.

The United States will move to tighten the punishing measures if diplomacy fails, he added.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said Monday that North Korea should approach this week's summit with Trump with "awareness".

Lee welcomed Trump for a one-on-one meeting at the Istana palace and invited the president to return to the island state on an official visit in November, an invitation Trump accepted, according to The Straits Times.

North Korea gets first big dose of Trump summit news
Menendez spoke Sunday on ABC's "This Week" as President Donald Trump arrived in Singapore ahead of Tuesday's talks with Kim. But in April, Kim announced a shift from a focus on building his nuclear arsenal to one of bolstering his tattered economy.

China, both Koreas and the United States would have to sign off on any legally binding treaty, so it is unlikely Kim and Trump will do more than express an intention to end the war.

"Trump is simply not experienced enough or temperamentally inclined to handle the complexity of nuclear negotiations or issues as complex as those associated with the long history of the Koreas", said David Rothkopf, a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

"I think the USA still sees the negotiation with North Korea from the perspective of American exceptionalism".

Then-South Korean President Syngman Rhee wanted to continue fighting and refused to sign the treaty.

He has said the talks would be more about starting a relationship with Kim for a negotiating process that would take more than one summit.

His sister and close aide Kim Yo Jong is also in Singapore, and is believed to have travelled separately on the ageing Soviet-made Ilyushin-62 that is Kim's personal aircraft.

U.S. evacuates American diplomats from China amid concerns over mystery illness
Cuba does not have an adversarial relationship with Canada, but Ottawa and Moscow have recently clashed over Canadian sanctions. Those attacks began sometime in mid-to-late 2016, according to USA officials who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon.

Reaction from US allies will also be watched closely as Trump continues to alienate traditional American partners through trade tariffs. Only after their t-te - t-te will the President's top advisers - Pompeo, chief of staff John Kelly and national security adviser John Bolton - join him for an expanded bilateral meeting and working lunch.
