World number one Nadal lost his first set at Roland Garros in three years, and when bad weather first interrupted the match the 10-time champion was in serious trouble with Schwartzman up a break in the second.

Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro were locked at 5-5 in a first-set tie-break when their quarter-final was suspended. Schwartzman saw two set points come and go but at the third time of asking, after a delay while a spectator was helped out after feeling ill, the Argentine ripped a forehand victor.

That victory secured a 16th grand slam title and, on current form, it would take a courageous person to bet against Nadal making it 17 in the French capital.

He also wanted his team to be more physical than they were in the two games played on Golden State's floor to start the series . Iguodala missed the rest of that series as well as Golden State's victories over the Cavs in games one and two of the Finals.

Spaniard Nadal, bidding for an 11th title on the Parisian clay, also trailed by a break in the second set as Schwartzman threatened a huge shock, but after a rain stoppage, Nadal returned to court to move 5-3 ahead in the second set.

Nadal's last win after losing the opening set came against Novak Djokovic in the 2014 final. World number one Nadal, who made 14 unforced errors and struck just four winners in the opener, has only lost two French Open matches in his career.

Schwartzman, the shortest player remaining in the men's draw, continued to thrill the Paris crowds with his tenacity and ball striking but was unable to take advantage of three break opportunities as an energised Nadal eventually served out for victory.

The Spaniard looked to be just a couple of points away from taking the second set when play was halted for the last time, however, serving with a 5-3 and 30-15 lead. It will be followed by the all-American matchup between Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens.

"I am very pleased to be in another final in Paris", said Muguruza who has yet to drop a set in the tournament and claimed her first win over Sharapova in four meetings.
