Cecchinato said he was stunned by his triumph, coming just two years after his career was nearly derailed when he became embroiled in match fixing allegations.

2016 champion Novak Djokovic suffers a shock 3-6 6-7 6-1 6-7 defeat to world number 72 Marco Cecchinato in the French Open quarter-finals at Roland Garros.

"Just a pity that I couldn't capitalise on the chances in the 4-1 in the fourth set and some break points".

Paris: Former champion Novak Djokovic claimed a hard fought 6-4, 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 victory over a grieving Roberto Bautista Agut on Friday to book his spot in the French Open fourth round.

Dominic Thiem took advantage of Alexander Zverev's depleted stamina to become the first qualifier for the men's semi-finals, beating the German 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 as the difference in court time at the competition told the story.

Initially banned for 18 months by the Italian Tennis Federation, which accused him of conspiring to fix two matches and using confidential information for gambling, his punishment was reduced to 12 months on appeal and then, after an appeal to the Italian Olympic Association. I'm very happy because it's unbelievable to beat Novak Djokovic in a quarter-final at Roland Garros.

Djokovic has now made the last 16 of a Slam for the 43rd time, tying Jimmy Connors on the all-time list.

In what was becoming a familiar tale, Martin Klizan, at 140, stunned him in Barcelona before there were signs of life with a semi-final run at Rome where it took Rafael Nadal to snuff out his challenge in the semi-finals. "Relax a little bit".

At 5-5 in the second set tie-breaker, a Djokovic volley deflected off the net and landed wide.

A tight first set heated up in the 10th game when Zverev saved two set points, the second after becoming incensed when the umpire overturned a line call of out from a Khachanov shot. Cecchinato led 3-1, then found himself trailing 4-3 before pocketing the remaining points.

I think it would probably get answered by, 'gosh that's what the Constitution says .' And if you want to change it, change it. Meantime, Giuliani has said before that the president's lawyers oppose Trump sitting down for an interview with Mueller.

Wimbledon starts on 2 July.

There were set points, and match points, as the Court Suzanne Lenglen crowd enjoyed some pop-corn tennis. However, in the fourth set, Cecchinato showed vast strength and unbelievable tennis to eventually take the match. He hit a superb forehand down the line but Djokovic stretched himself for a lunging backhand volley that gave him a crosscourt victor, and a chance to fight a few other points.

But the Russian sealed the set at the third time of asking, leaving the world number three needing a fightback for the third consecutive match.

Inexperienced, maybe, but certainly not a newbie on clay.

Against Djokovic, his sliding across the court was almost flawless, as was his ability to disguise his angles until the last moment in what was perhaps the match of the tournament so far. It was 10-10, and it was not over yet. As his backhand return on his fourth match point landed beyond the outstretched arm of Djokovic, the tears flowed.

The 25-year-old Cecchinato dropped onto his back on the clay, then sat in his sideline chair, bowed his head and cried.
