  • Trump: Plan for June summit with North Korea 'hasn't changed'

The high-stakes summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un over Pyongyang's denuclearization is expected to take place in Singapore on June 12.

"Our United States team has arrived in North Korea to make arrangements for the Summit between Kim Jong Un and myself", Trump wrote on Twitter, in Washington's first confirmation that USA officials had entered North Korea for the talks.

Trump is scheduled to have a summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim in Singapore on June 12.

Chung Sung-yoon, an analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, said Kim Yong-chol would be the most senior North Korean official to step onto USA soil since Vice Marshall Jo Myong-rok met then-president Bill Clinton in 2000.

In their meeting on Saturday, Kim reaffirmed his commitment to "complete" denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and to a planned summit with Trump, Moon told reporters in Seoul.

Sung Kim, the former USA ambassador to South Korea and current ambassador to the Philippines, led that American delegation, an American official said.

The on-and-off-again Singapore summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un is just a few weeks away. According to Mr. Moon, the North Korean leader said he's willing to cooperate to end confrontation and work toward peace for the sake of a successful North Korea-U.S. summit.

The Washington Post reported that senior diplomat Sung Kim was leading the us delegation, and that the two sides planned to continue talking Monday and Tuesday.

Saturday's Korean summit came hours after South Korea expressed relief over revived talks for a Trump-Kim meeting.

The Post said the meetings would continue on Monday and Tuesday at Tongilgak, the North's building in Panmunjom, where the truce suspending the 1950-53 Korean War was signed.

On Monday, the president discussed the summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Monday morning, CNN reported. He later said the USA was talking to North Korea and it could still go ahead. Three thousand miles away in Singapore, a team of USA logistics officials arrived late Monday and was expecting the arrival of a corresponding team from Pyongyang.

According to NHK, Japan's public broadcaster, Abe - who was meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation over the weekend - conveyed both Japan's and Russia's support for the summit meeting to go forward.

There has been continuous low-level ash emission from Kilauea's summit with larger explosions every few hours, said U.S. Earlier this month officials removed a flammable gas called pentane from the plant to reduce the chance of explosions.

U.S. officials also entered North Korea yesterday to hold talks on preparations for a possible summit, a U.S. newspaper reported. "That hasn't changed. And it's moving along pretty well, so we'll see what happens", he said.

"In Trump's thinking, his "maximum pressure" would've resulted in Kim kneeling and returning to dialogue in surrender anyway if it reached the boiling point", he added.

A former US director of national intelligence, James Clapper, also on CBS, expressed concern Pyongyang may demand the removal or scaling back of American troops in South Korea in exchange for denuclearization. South Korea and China account for nearly all of North Korea's land borders, so their support is essential for enforcing sanctions ramped up past year after Mr Kim declared the ability to strike the United States with a nuclear weapon.

Kim is considered the North Korean leader's right-hand man and serves as the vice central committee chairman of the North's ruling Workers' Party.

The Global Times has cited multiple Chinese government approved "experts" who state that Trump responding to the incessant belligerence from Pyongyang by canceling the summit made Trump, not Kim, look bad.
