President Donald Trump indicated on Friday that the proposed summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may still happen in Singapore next month.

Moon said he held Saturday's impromptu meeting at Kim's request.

Trump's letter came after North Korea attacked Vice President Mike Pence as "ignorant and stupid" for his warnings over the planned summit, renewing a threat to cancel the historic talks.

He then shook hands with Moon, which was the first-ever meeting between them after the Korean War ended in 1953.

A meeting between the two Koreas had been called off ahead of Trump's announcement he, too, would not meet with the North Korean leader.

"Chairman Kim made clear once again his intentions to completely denuclearize the Korean Peninsula as he did in the Panmunjeom Declaration", President Moon said in a statement Sunday local time, according to a NBC News translation.

At the meeting, Kim was with his sister Kim Yo-jong and his top aide Kim Yong chol in charge of inter-Korean affairs.

"Our US team has arrived in North Korea to make arrangements for the Summit between Kim Jong Un and myself", he tweeted, Xinhua reported.

In Pyongyang, North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan said North Korea regretted Trump's decision to cancel and remained open to resolving issues "regardless of ways, at any time".

This surprise meeting, on the North Korean side of the shared inter-Korean area of Panmunjom, comes after President Trump on Thursday abruptly scuttled a summit with Kim, planned for June 12 in Singapore.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters Trump did not want a meeting that was "just a political stunt".

The European Commissioner for Energy, Miguel Arias Canete, is expected on Friday in Tehran, where he will meet for three days with Iranian officials.

"We're going to see what happens", Trump told reporters at the White House, after welcoming Pyongyang's latest statement on the talks as "very good news".

"Both sides still leave some maneuver for a discussion", Wang said Friday on a panel at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russian Federation.

The meeting inside the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) dividing the two nations comes a day after the United States president said his summit with Pyongyangcould still go ahead.

The US also claimed in a background briefing that North Korean officials had failed to show up in Singapore to arrange logistics for the June meeting.

Moon crossed the border to meet Kim at the Tongilgak building in an area of Panmunjom controlled by North Korea.
