  • Two Palestinians killed by Israeli tank fire in Gaza

Two of those killed were identified as 25-year-old Hussein al-Amour, 28-year-old Abdul Haleem al-Naqa, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

A statement from the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, the Al-Quds Brigades, claimed the two as members.

Israeli military officials said Sunday's attacks targeted an observation post manned by militants from the Islamic Jihad organisation, Al Jazeera reported.

The military said the operation was in response to a brief incursion across the border earlier in the day by Palestinians who immediately fled back into Gaza.

Since then, Israel has been preparing for possible attacks by sea by Hamas, especially as the IDF has improved its ability to detect and destroy Hamas tunnels under the fence separating the Gaza Strip from Israel.

It said the explosive device had been hidden inside a pair of fence cutters.

It added that the strike was also in retaliation for repeated Palestinian attempts to damage the border fence and "security infrastructure" during ongoing border protests.

It said troops responded with tear gas and live fire.

The Israeli military aggression killed almost 2,200 Palestinians and injured over 11,100 others.

Around 5,000 Palestinians had turned out for protests against Israeli forces on Friday, the smallest number since the six-week-long "Great March of Return" protests kicked off on March 30 demanding the right to return to ancestral homelands in what is now Israel.

Low-level demonstrations along the border have continued since protests peaked on 14 May, when at least 61 Palestinians died while tens of thousands of Gazans protested as the U.S. moved its embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

Meanwhile, a 41-year-old Palestinian died of wounds sustained during protests some days ago at the border between Gaza and Israel, the Gaza Health Ministry reported on Saturday.

According to Israeli media, the defence ministry ordered the construction of the barrier in the aftermath of the 2014 war with Gaza and after discovering that Hamas fighters had successfully entered Israel by sea.
