Tributes poured in Wednesday honouring the late U.S. literary giant Philip Roth, whose prolific career as a novelist, essayist and critic chronicled the American experience in the 20th century.

Roth, a celebrated author who passed away on Tuesday, once penned some devastating analysis on President Trump, calling him a "callow and callous killer capitalist".

The New York Times reports the cause of death was congestive heart failure, according to a close friend.

Roth won almost every coveted award for literature in his incredible career, including the Pulitzer Prize for his 1997 work American Pastoral.

The author of more than 25 books, Roth was an uncompromising realist and satirist, confronting readers in a bold, direct style that scorned false sentiment or hopes for heavenly reward.

Roth was an atheist who swore allegiance to earthly imagination, whether devising pornographic functions for raw liver or indulging romantic fantasies about Anne Frank.

"I have many favorite books by Roth, but this is one of them". He continued to write well into the 2000s before retiring in 2012. His more recent books included 2001's "The Dying Animal" and 'The Human Stain, ' published in 2000 and released in 2003 as a movie starring Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman. He started his college education at the Newark branch of Rutgers University as a pre-law student, and eventually transferred to Bucknell College, where changed his major to literature.

The following year he returned to Chicago to get a Ph.D in English but he dropped our after one term.

Roth, however, did not feel comfortable with his reiterated categorization as a Jewish-American writer. Roth was also known for exploring sexuality in his books. He was also won of the most decorated writers of his generation, having won the Putlizer, two National Book Critics Circle Awards, a Man Booker International Prize and three PEN/Faulkner awards.

Roth also received the Pulitzer Price for fiction for his 1997 book "American Pastoral", which featured his recurring alter ago Nathan Zuckerman. Until his abrupt retirement, Roth was a dedicated, prolific author who often published a book a year and was generous to writers from other countries.

The European Commissioner for Energy, Miguel Arias Canete, is expected on Friday in Tehran, where he will meet for three days with Iranian officials.

Novelist Philip Roth was presented with the National Humanities Medal in 2011.

His final novel "Nemesis", about a 1944 polio epidemic, came out in 2010.

Roth's personal life was dragged into the spotlight following his messy breakup with British actress Claire Bloom, who painted a grim picture of life with her ex-husband in her 1996 memoir "Leaving a Doll's House". "If I'm not an American, I'm nothing", said Roth. Steeped in acerbic humour, which increasingly turned black, several of his best novels, including the American trilogy (American Pastoral, I Married a Communist and The Human Stain) were written in a stunning late-career resurgence.

But Roth was true to his word and, he claimed, perfectly content with life-after-literature, even though he readily admitted that writing had long served as a way to keep depression at bay.
