Productivity around the world took a massive dive yesterday as people started debating whether they could hear the word "yanny" or "laurel" in a four-second audio clip which took over the internet.

The audio clip bends the question to what is heard, rather than what is seen, and people are fired up about it. "The sound seems to have a mix of some cues for the sounds making up laurel, and also some cues for the sounds making up yanny".

"There really isn't a true reality, there is only our perceptual reality", Crum said.

The same ambiguous sound can even be perceived by a listener as different words each time they hear it, and brain activity in the superior temporal gyrus closely tracks what the listener perceives.

"But in this case we have an isolated sound with no context", forcing people to rely on a variety of other factors such as voices they've listened to recently.
