"The driver said she was heading to an address, and she'd entered the Global Positioning System into the vehicle and she was comparing the address to her phone to see which was the shorter route", Winkler said.

"What's actually incredible about this accident is that a Model S hit a fire truck at 60 miles per hour and the driver only broke an ankle", Musk tweeted. Based upon witness information, the driver of the Tesla did not brake or take any action to avoid the collision.

Cantonal police in Ticino are not commenting on the fatal accident which is one of three incidents involving Tesla cars in recent days.

"The vehicle frame was bent and there was significant damage", Winkler said.

Mariners, Tigers split doubleheader
The Tigers' leading bat coming into the weekend was Nick Castellans with 45 hits, 20 runs and 23 RBI. He hit a three-run home run Saturday in the second game of the doubleheader against the Tigers.

Police said speed was a factor, but also that the auto burst into flames shortly after the accident.

On Twitter, co-founder Elon Musk said it was "super messed up" that the incident was garnering public attention, while thousands of accidents involving traditional automobiles "get nearly no coverage". "They said they'd put it at the top of their priority list".

In a Twitter post on Monday, Musk denied a Wall Street Journal report that Tesla had rejected a system that would have tracked driver eye movement when using Autopilot for cost reasons.

The driver in that incident died, but Tesla said he was pulled from the vehicle before it caught fire. "Drivers need to pay attention, and companies need to take responsibility for the fact that greater automation opens the door to risky, and foreseeable, distractions". "And (the Tesla driver) could be facing a citation for failing to maintain control of her vehicle".

Investors gave a rare rebuke to Musk after he cut off financial analysts on the earnings call, sending shares down 5 percent despite promises that Model 3 production was on track. The NTSB investigation will no doubt cover this issue, but Tesla has yet to confirm any facts in this case. The NTSB had yet to announce whether they will be looking into the Utah crash.

Tesla has released several statements on the accident, including a March 30 blog post that expressed sorrow for the family but defended its technology and pointed responsibility for the crash on the driver.

Tesla (TSLA -3.6%) plans a six-day pause in production at its Fremont factory in order to make some assembly line fixes, sources tell Reuters.
