China has been ramping-up efforts to police language used to describe Chinese-claimed territories such as Taiwan.

USA clothing retailer Gap has apologised to China over a T-shirt with a map showing the mainland but omitting Taiwan, becoming the latest foreign firm to run afoul of Beijing's policy on the self-ruling island. The shirt could not be found on Gap websites and it wasn't clear whether it was still being sold in shops in some countries.

Global fashion brand Zara was also ordered by the internet regulator in Shanghai to update its website after listing Taiwan as a country, medical equipment maker Medtronic was also ordered to publicly apologise on its website for making the same mistake. Each of the companies has subsequently apologized.
