The tech giant will now require that customers who buy political ads that appear to U.S users provide a government issued ID and "other key information" to confirm that they are US citizens or permanent residents, Google said on Friday. Google has now announced that it's taking a similar step for election ad buyers on its platform. What this means is that advertisers will have to furnish their government-issued ID and other key information before they're allowed to buy election ads on Google.

"As we learn from these changes and our continued engagement with leaders and experts in the field", Google says, "we'll work to improve transparency of political issue ads and expand our coverage to a wider range of elections".

"To help people better understand who is paying for an election ad, we're also requiring that ads incorporate a clear disclosure of who is paying for it".

Walker also proclaimed that Google has also introduced Jigsaw Protect Your Elections Toolkit, which can be called as a direct response to the interference of Russian Federation in several elections globally.

Coal mine accidents toll rises to 23

"We know we were slow to pick up foreign interference in the 2016 USA elections", Goldman and Himel said in the post.

Included in the report details will be info on who is paying for the election ads, as well as how much money they're spending.

The company has also partnered with the National Cyber Security Alliance and Digital Democracy Project at the Belfer Center at Harvard Kennedy School to fund security training programs for elected officials, campaigns, and staff members.

However, the new policy will cover ads that relate to candidates and not ads that related to specific political issues.

This was done in response to scrutiny Google had come under over its role in the spread of fake news and misinformation during the U.S. Presidential Election.

Facebook isn't the only one with too much of your data.

Google is following in the footsteps of Facebook and Twitter by making changes to the ways that it handles political ads in the U.S. to avoid another Russian interference scandal.
