Facebook F8: Highlights and all the Latest Announcements

  • Facebook's adding AR and translation tools to Messenger

I tried Match.com more than 10 years ago when nearly nobody trusted online dating and those of us who were fearless enough to try it typically lied about it since no one else was into it.

Facebook doesn't think hookups are meaningful and doesn't want you to date your friends - but it's known for a long time that its vast map of human connections could help people find long-term partners.

The social media giant's attempts at playing cupid will look to rival the likes of Match, which saw its shares tumble 17 per cent last night following Facebook's announcement.

Facebook is doing this for its own users, too, and it is done to sell targeted advertising to you, which is one of the ways that Facebook makes money. But for the key takeaway is this: Given that Facebook is used by over 2 billion people, you will have a lot of potential matches in Facebook Dating.

Danish man convicted under Malaysia's anti-fake news law for YouTube video
I did not know what the law is here. "I seriously apologise to everybody in Malaysia , not just in the Malaysian police", he said. The maximum punishment for spreading fake news is 500,000 Malaysian ringgit ($128,000) and 10 years in jail.

He told his audience that the match-making feature would take privacy issues in mind and would launch "soon".

After setting up a profile, you can browse events and groups based on location and interests. The new feature, called "Clear History" will allow every user to clear their browsing history on Facebook: what they have clicked on, the websites they have visited, the apps they have signed up to and interacted with... Shares in various dating platforms recorded a steep fall immediately after Zuckerberg's statements on the dating feature, "more than 22% below their opening price", according to BBC.

Right now, no one knows how good and or bad Facebook's match suggestions are going to be.

Cox also said that people who use the dating service will use separate messaging tools from Facebook's other messaging apps, like Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp, because "people wanted a separate space". But following it, the company shared some details on the new dating service. Among a number of insignificant software updates (and the new option to wipe your data history) Facebook revealed the real shocker: it's building a dating platform.

Royals end 5-game skid, beat White Sox to split doubleheader
The Royals will send left-hander Danny Duffy to the mound Friday to try to slow down the White Sox momentum at Kauffman Stadium. The White Sox have lost six of their last seven series openers and seven of their last eight against a right-handed starter.

The most important change involved giving its users the power to delete any personal information Facebook has collected.

Among the biggest announcements made on the first day of the conference was Facebook's plans to build a "Clear History" privacy tool which will enable users to see the websites and apps that send information to Facebook when they use them.

Also, the Dating inbox will only allow text messages to be sent by users which means that you can not send videos, photos, GIFs, links and furthermore, this will not be connected to your Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp. "The feature will be rolling out later this year", Facebook said on Tuesday.
