  • A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade released in a statement that'the off-gassing from this waste had permeated the air-handling system alarming the students and staff

Firefighters were called to the RMIT University campus on La Trobe Street just after 3pm after a smell of gas was reported in the building, said a report in The Sydney Morning Herald.

Durian is a tropical fruit known for its strong smell.

"So perhaps it's no surprise that a rotting durian sparked fears of a major gas leak in a Melbourne library on Saturday, leading to the evacuation of hundreds", another user tweeted.

Texas Couple Charged With Enslaving African Girl
After years of physical and emotional abuse and suppression, the girl was finally able to escape, leading to the couple's arrest. The Toures are also accused of confiscating the girl's official documentation and keeping her in the USA until her visa expired.

According to a MFB statement, the building was known to store potentially unsafe chemicals. The fire brigade sent out an alert about a chemical hazard.

Apparently the smell had been filtered through the building by the air conditioning system.

This sort of fruit-driven flight would surprise few who have come in contact with the durian, a native of Southeast Asia with an odor that has been compared to "turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock", "hot poop garbage" and "gasoline".

The epic stench at Melbourne's RMIT library was caused by a rotten durian which had been left in a cupboard.

MFB informed that Melbourne's Environment Protection Authority will oversee the "removal and storage of the waste".
