  • Airlines React to Engine Issue

Following the fatal engine failure on a 737 Tuesday, the Federal Aviation Administration is poised to issue an emergency airworthiness directive calling for stepped up inspections of the CFM56-7B engine manufactured by CFM International. The blast shattered a window, killing a passenger, in the first U.S. passenger airline fatality since 2009.

A Southwest Airlines plane flying from NY to Dallas had to make an emergency landing Tuesday morning in Philadelphia after one of its engines was damaged, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. About 20 minutes into the flight, at about 32,500 feet, a fan blade broke off the engine and shrapnel shattered a window.

The directive comes after the left engine of Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 suddenly blew apart during a Tuesday flight from NY to Dallas.

About 680 engines are concerned, according to CFM, which noted that each inspection takes about four hours.

The FAA said the inspection mandate applies to CFM56-7B engines that have made 30,000 trips since their last inspection.

More than 150 have already been inspected. An jet-engine bicycle comprises landing, take off and a motor beginning, and complete shut down.

A preliminary examination of the blown jet engine showed evidence of "metal fatigue", said USA transport officials.

National Weather Service confirms tornado in Danville; winds reached 110 miles per hour
This was an incredibly fast moving tornado (moving at 60 mph) with winds estimated at 105 miles per hour , the rating is an EF-1. The survey team found damage to a church, garage and outbuildings along with several trees snapped or uprooted.

The FAA mandate requires all airlines to inspect fan blades on certain CFM56-7B engines, the engines that are used on the workhorse Boeing 737 flown by virtually all airlines.

Each aircraft has two engines. "Also, it recommends inspections by the end of August for fan blades with 20,000 cycles, and inspections to all other fan blades when they reach 20,000 cycles".

An FAA spokesman said the agency disputed that it had not agreed with European regulators on the response to the engine issue.

After the first inspection, airlines should keep repeating the process every 3,000 cycles, which typically represents about two years in service.
